A Bronx mother and her boyfriend were charged on Monday with the murder of her 8-year-old son over nine months after the autistic boy died at a hospital, police said.
The charges come less than a week after little Joseph Barney’s death was ruled a homicide, as a result of battered child syndrome.
The mom, Sharay Barney, 29, and her 33-year-old boyfriend Michael Ransom, were also charged with manslaughter and aggravated Manslaughter, cops said.
Last June, the mother brought her son from their Williamsbridge home to Montefiore Medical Center in an Uber, cops and sources said.
Cops responded to a call from the hospital’s emergency room and found the boy unconscious and unresponsive.

The mom and stepdad of an autistic 8-year-old Bronx boy who died last year allegedly starved and beat the child, according to troubling new court papers.
Authorities found Joseph Barney “suffered from starvation and abusive head trauma” as well as other, older injuries that were “indicative of child abuse,” according to a criminal complaint released late Tuesday.
Joseph weighed only 40 pounds, under the first percentile for his height, when he died at Montefiore Medical Center on June 1, 2021, court papers say.
Both his mother, Sharay Barney, 29, and stepfather, Michael Ransom, 33 — who are both facing manslaughter charges — admitted to cops that they noticed the child had lost weight, the documents say.
The mom and stepdad pleaded not guilty to the charges in criminal court Tuesday night, a Bronx district attorney spokeswoman said.

Navasia Jones and Paul Fine, Jr. arrested in death of 7-year-old Julissia Batties

The mother and teen brother of 7-year-old Julissia Batties were arrested Wednesday for allegedly beating her to death in their Bronx home last summer, ending a nearly year-long wait by the girl’s family for justice to be served.
Navasia Jones, 35, and Paul Fine, Jr., 18, were detained on Wednesday morning and charged with murder and manslaughter for killing Julissia, who was returned to her mother despite pleas from the helpless little girl.
“I didn’t kill my daughter, bitch,” Jones snapped at a reporter outside the 40th Precinct station house in Mott Haven.
Fine was also charged with sexual abuse for allegedly assaulting his little sister. A police source told The Post the girl’s autopsy revealed that she had been sodomized.

The arrests came as a welcome relief for the girl’s grandmother and former caretaker, who has waited nearly one year after the tragic death for the mother to be held accountable.
“Oh my God, I’ve never been so happy,” the slain girl’s grandmother Yolanda Davis told The Post. “Oh my God, thank you so much. Oh my God, I really thank him.”
“I’m just so happy I’m getting justice for my granddaughter,” she said. “Oh my God, I’ve never felt so great.”

“I’m going to court, I gotta see this. This, I definitely gotta see.”
Julissia’s dad Julius Batties, told The Post it was a “great day.”
“I’m extremely happy for this arrest. I can finally start the process of healing,” he said. “It took almost a whole year but it’s here and I’m ready for this process to keep going.”
He added: “I want to thank the detective and the DA for their hard work.”

Batties later stood outside the 40th Precinct stationhouse to see his ex and her teen son led out in handcuffs.
He said the system “definitely failed her first and foremost,” referring to a lack of oversight by the Administration of Children’s Services.
“I miss her every day. I miss her all the time,” he said of his daughter. “I’m her voice and I’m never going to shut up.”

Jones, wearing a white Gucci shirt, black pants and black boots, denied she killed her daughter while cops escorted her to court.
Both the mother and her son were arraigned in Bronx court later on Wednesday afternoon and ordered held without bail.
Prosecutors revealed horrific details during the arraignments.
The tiny victim was “sexually assaulted as she was dying,” and had “600 milliliters of blood in her abdomen.” The beatings the girl was subjected to had “enough force for internal organs to tear and bleed,” prosecutors said.
The brother even admitted to beating the girl while speaking to investigators from ACS.
“Defendant Paul Fine Jr. confessed to ACS that he had assaulted Julissia all over her body in the two-day period for which he is charged,” Assistant District Attorney Camila Sosa said in court.
“He also admitted to both ACS and the police that he punched her multiple times in the face on the day that she was pronounced dead,” Sosa said, “and that he had done so because she had thrown up or stolen snacks.”
She said Fine was accused of “continuing to beat and sexually abuse Julissia as she lay dying.”
Jones’ lawyer, Filaree Moore, had asked the judge that her client be released without bail or on low bail, arguing she didn’t know the girl was in need of care because she isn’t “a medical professional.”

“What the district attorney is describing… punching, wheezing,” Moore argued, “[Jones] didn’t realize there was anything to seek medical attention for.”
But outside the courtroom, the slain girl’s aunt echoed the family’s glee that charges were finally filed in the youngster’s death.
“This part is wonderful,” said Felicia Thomas. “It’s a big relief. I thought this day would never come.”
Glaring at Fine when he was led in, she yelled, “Your ass is grass, mister!”
The tragic girl’s lifeless body — with evidence of trauma all over — was found the morning of Aug. 10, 2021 inside an apartment in the Mitchel Houses on Alexander Avenue, cops said.
“Mom and brother are both culpable,” a high-ranking police source said. “They both had a role in it, but who delivered the fatal blow is not clear.”

After the little girl was found dead, the girl’s mom told cops that she fell and hit her head on a desk.
But the teen brother later admitted that he assaulted his sister before she was found dead in their apartment, police sources told The Post a day after the slaying.
Fine Jr. allegedly admitted during questioning that he had punched his sister eight times in the face when their mother went to the store around 5 a.m., the sources said.
Hours later, the girl started throwing up and passed out, prompting the 35-year-old mom to call 911.
Batties was rushed to Lincoln Hospital but could not be saved.
The case was ruled a homicide, cops said. She died of “blunt force abdominal trauma,” according to the city medical examiner’s office.
Cops have been called to the apartment in NYCHA’s Mitchel Houses on Alexander Avenue six times over the past three years, according to sources, who said that on at least one of those occasions, the mother covered for the teen boy.
The last call came in March 2020, sources said.
In a heartbreaking audio recording obtained by The Post, young Julissia cried hysterically and begged her grandmother not to send her for a court-ordered weekend visit with her mom.
Despite her pleas, Julissia was sent to visit her mother, who lost custody of the girl at birth, along with four sons, due to alleged negligence and physical abuse.
Against objections by her grandmother and court-appointed lawyer, the city Administration for Children’s Services last June 21 finally returned Julissia to live with her mother, without supervision, for the first time.
She was killed less than two months later.

A 3-year-old boy died after he was discovered with bruises all over his body and suffering from a collapsed lung at a Queens homeless shelter — and his father was charged with murder in connection with the case Wednesday, police said.
Little Shaquan Butler was found unconscious inside the shelter at 79-00 Queens Boulevard at around 7:40 p.m. on Sunday, according to cops. He was rushed by EMS to NYC Health & Hospital/Elmhurst, where he was pronounced dead.
His 26-year-old dad, also named Shaquan Butler, was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder and manslaughter, police said.
The tot’s 21-year-old mother allegedly told cops that he had fallen and hit his head on the kitchen floor after choking on a chicken nugget.
But the medical examiner found that Shaquan sustained blunt force trauma to the torso, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Medics concluded that the bruises on the boy’s body were in various stages of healing and allegedly indicated abuse, reported ABC 7 New York. He also had a collapsed lung at the time of his death.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A woman identified as a caregiver of the 3-year-old girl found unresponsive in a bathtub in West Philadelphia is now facing charges for allegedly abusing her own children, the Philadelphia District Attorney's office says.

Police say Kiarali Rodriguez-Ayala, 23, was caring for the 3-year-old when she was found in the tub at a home on the 400 block of North 50th Street on Friday.

When first responders arrived at that home, they also found Rodriguez-Ayala's children, ages 2 and 4, with "obvious injuries," according to the DA's office. The two children were taken to a hospital for treatment of bruises and burn marks.

Rodriguez-Ayala is charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault and reckless endangerment, plus one weapons charge.

Bail was set at $1 million, and she was also ordered to stay away from children.

Rodriguez-Ayala was not related to the 3-year-old girl in her care, the DA's office said. Philadelphia police are still investigating that child's death.

The child died at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia less than an hour after police responded to the scene.

The cause of death is unclear at this point.

A tragic 6-year-old girl found unconscious and covered in bruises in a squalid Bronx apartment died Friday — and police were questioning her mother as a person of interest, cops said.
Little Jalayah Eason, whose cries could be heard by neighbors of the family’s home in the past, was discovered by cops after a 911 call was made by her mom at about 4 a.m.
The mother, whom sources identified as Lynija Eason, told officers she found the girl cold and not breathing inside a closet in their 12th-floor apartment at NYCHA’s Forest Houses on East 165th Street.
She claimed she tried to administer CPR, but the Jalayah would not wake up, cops said. EMS arrived 15 minutes later and rushed the girl to Lincoln Hospital, but she couldn’t be saved.
Bruises and other signs of trauma were discovered on Jalayah’s wrists and torso — and the her mother was soon taken to the 42nd Precinct station house, where she was being questioned Friday. She has not been charged.
An upstairs neighbor who was alarmed by an early morning commotion on Friday recalled hearing the child “screaming for her dear life.”
“At 3:42 in the morning that girl was screaming,” Dennis Rivera, 58, said. “She was screaming for dear life . . . She was screaming like hell.”
“She kept saying ‘stop, stop, stop’ . . . “You could hear the thumps, bro.”

‘Don’t get involved’

The father of 10 said he woke up one of his sons amid the madness and asked whether he should call the police, but the boy warned him not to get involved.

“I feel terrible. I feel like I could have saved that little girl and I didn’t. It’s a sad situation — very sad, man.”

Rivera added said the sounds of the little girl’s screams continue to haunt him.

Other neighbors painted a grim picture of homelife for the child.

“The little girl would be running around, then she would cry, like screaming, crying,” said babysitter, Michelle Abreu, who said she could hear the sounds from the family’s home while working in an apartment below.

“She’s not happy, that little girl.”

Abreu added that news of the death was heartbreaking.

“I can’t stop crying, because it’s sad,” she said.

A classmate of Jalayah’s 8-year-old brother said the siblings “seemed very sad.”

“He told me his mom was whipping him, slapping him,” said the 9-year-old classmate at PS 146. “He said the mother was slapping [Jalayah] in the face.”

It was not clear if Jalayah attended PS 146, but a school official said, “We tried to do everything we could to help that family,” without elaborating further.

Cops said there were dirty clothes in piles around the apartment, which looked as if no one has cleaned it for a while.

The 8-year-old boy and another sibling, a 3-year-old girl, were also in the apartment but were unharmed.

It was unclear exactly how little Jalayah died.

A high-ranking police source said the mother was a person of interest Friday afternoon.

“Definitely suspicious at this time,” the sources said.

The source also said the investigation “may not resolve today” as investigators are waiting for the results of an autopsy.

ACS has been alerted

Eason has one prior arrest from 2016 when she was picked up for grand larceny.

The city’s Administration for Children’s Services said they had been alerted to the situation, but would not comment on whether or not the family had been under their observation before the death.

Sources said there have been multiple calls for domestic violence at the family’s address.

Another neighbor was shocked by the news.

“She’s a good mother every time I see her,” Ishia Gilchrest said. “I always see her with her kids. She took them to school, she always brought them back. I’m surprised, I didn’t expect her to have problems like that.”

Jalayah’s death comes two months after a 16-month-old boy died at Richmond University Medical Center after being rushed to the hospital.

[IMG alt="The young girl’s mom, who has been identified as Lynija Eason, was questioned over the death but no one has been charged as of yet.

The tot had been sharing a bed with his father in their house on Hamilton Avenue near St. Marks Place in St. George on Feb. 20 when the dad noticed the toddler was unconscious just after 4 a.m.

Earlier this month, the 16-month-old’s death was ruled a homicide after cops found he had a lethal dose of fentanyl and cocaine in his system.

As of Friday, no arrests have been made in that case either.

A Bronx mom being questioned in the fatal beating of her 6-year-old daughter spent the days ahead of the killing bragging on Facebook about her job — and posted about “kindness and compassion” in the weeks before her child’s death.
“I’m just up thinking like how deep i was really in the streets literally in my living room cooking upppp to now being a whole NYC city agent with a whole 401K & everything… God gone do it EVERYTIME!” the mom, Lynija Eason, posted to the social media site about a week ago.
Eason, who also uses the name Lynija Mone online, is in police custody after her daughter Jalayah Eason was found unconscious and covered in bruises inside the family’s squalid Bronx apartment Friday.
Neighbors heard the girl, who later died, beg for her life during a 4 a.m. beating.
Eason has not been charged in Jalayah’s death.
The mom’s online commentary betrayed no sign of the girl’s horrifying end.
Eason, who claims she works as a 311 operator, also remarked on the disappearance and deaths of two boys who had been playing near the shore before their bodies turned up in the waters off Manhattan.
The mom wrote the situation “doesn’t make sense. So if the witness saw him pushing the other boy into the water where was this witness when they was missing for 5days ?!?!?! Who tf is lying toooo like please okay !!!!”

As of Saturday afternoon, Eason was still in police custody, according to the NYPD. The Post could not confirm her employment and 311 said she did not work there.

On May 17, Eason reposted a meme that read in part, “Me at home: The world is a dark place, we need more kindness and compassion towards one another. Me in public: I hate every single person on this planet.”

Eason told officers she found Jalayah cold and not breathing inside a closet in their 12th-floor apartment at NYCHA’s Forest Houses on East 165th Street. The mom claimed she tried to administer CPR, but that Jalayah would not wake up. EMS arrived 15 minutes later and rushed the doomed girl to Lincoln Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Saddened neighbors on Saturday said they tried to chat with Eason and the girl but were rebuffed.

Maria Diaz, 60, who has lived in the building for 30 years, said she had seen Jalayah with her “always quiet” mom, but neither acknowledged her “hello.” Diaz noted she’s “seen so many kids going up and down” the building elevator “but I never knew what was going on up there.”

Mother of man accused of killing 3-month-old daughter in NYC says he had ‘no remorse’

The man accused of killing his “defenseless” 3-month-old daughter and leaving her body in a trash-strewn wooded area near Yankee Stadium asked his mother whether she’d turn him in “if I did something wrong,” the grieving grandma told The Post.
Damion Comager, 23, originally from Louisiana, was charged Monday with murder, manslaughter and concealment of a human corpse in connection to the tragic death of little Genevieve Rozzlyn Comager, whose body was found in The Bronx Sunday night, police said.
Comager’s mother, Ashley Holmes, said her son confessed to her in a Saturday night phone call during a conversation about baby clothes.
“He said he wanted to ask me a hypothetical question,” Holmes said Monday night. “He said, ‘If I did something wrong, would you call the authorit[ies] on me?’ I said, ‘It depends on what you did,’ not knowing he already did it.”
Comager finally told his mother: “She is gone, she is gone,” according to Holmes.
“I said, ‘Gone where?’” Holmes continued. “When he told me, I said, ‘What? No you didn’t.’ I just hollered and hit my steering wheel, and that’s when I called his daddy. To me, he sounded like [he had] no remorse.”

Damion Comager, 23, and Ivana Paolozzi, 20, seen in an Instagram photo with slain infant daughter Genevieve Comager.Damion Comager confessed to the crime in a Saturday night phone call, his mother told The Post. Instagram
The devastating exchange prompted Holmes to contact “child protective services,” she claimed. The Post could not immediately confirm Tuesday that the Administration for Children’s Services had been involved in the case.

A spokeswoman for the Administration for Children’s Services confirmed that the agency has been involved in investigating the case.

“Our top priority is protecting the safety and well-being of all children in New York City,” the ACS rep said. “As soon as this family came to our attention after this tragic matter arose, we launched an immediate investigation with the NYPD.”

Then, “I called his daddy and we had a three-way conversation,” the young man’s stricken mother added.

Damion’s dad, Donald Comager, 47, previously told The Post he consulted with a priest before deciding to “do the right thing” and turn his own son in to police.

“That’s when they started searching for the baby,” Holmes said.

Damion Comager is pictured holding his infant daughter Genevieve. Damion Comager (pictured) seemed to lack remorse as he told his mother the baby is “gone.”Instagram
Authorities found Genevieve’s body around 8:25 p.m. Sunday – about two weeks after she was dumped there – when they searched the wooded area at West 161st Street and the Major Deegan Expressway, cops and law enforcement sources said.

According to sources, Damion allegedly admitted that he shook and slapped the baby on May 14 when she wouldn’t stop crying.

“He told me the baby was doing a lot of crying. She wouldn’t stop crying,” Donald Comager said of his son. “He said he just shook her and lay her down, and he lay down and went to sleep.

“He got up and reached for her and she was stiff and her body was cold. He panicked. He told his girlfriend, ‘I think she is dead.’”

Damion Comager’s girlfriend Ivana Paolozzi, 20, originally from Switzerland, was also charged with concealment of a human corpse and obstructing governmental administration, police said.

Comager allegedly told cops he didn’t want to take her to a hospital after she became unresponsive because she had marks around her neck that he feared would raise suspicion, the sources said.

Later that morning, the girl was stuffed in a bag and dumped in the wooded area, not far from where the couple had lived with their baby, at a transitional housing shelter on University Avenue, according to the sources.

Holmes said she first realized something was wrong when her son stopped FaceTiming her with his infant daughter in tow.

“I didn’t ask why,” she said. “I just thought he stopped FaceTiming me and we talk[ed] on the phone. I knew something was wrong when I wasn’t hearing the baby. I asked him, ‘How is the baby?’ He would say, ‘The baby is fine, the baby is sleeping.’”

Little Genevieve used to cry a lot, according to Holmes, who said she had previously suggested that the baby wasn’t properly fed.

Damion told his mother that Ivana was breastfeeding, but it wasn’t enough, and the couple didn’t have money to buy formula, Holmes claimed.

“I said she [was] hungry and that’s why she was crying,” Holmes said. “’You [both are] not feeding her enough.’”

Damion’s mom, dad and stepmom started sending money to buy formula for the baby, Holmes said.

“Anything you need for that baby, we will give it to you,” she claimed she offered her son.

Earlier on Saturday, Damion told his mother, “‘Ma, I need some food. We are hungry,’” Holmes recalled, adding she didn’t have any money to send, so she called Damion’s father to let him know.

“I told him I was going to Walmart to get the baby some clothes,” she recalled. “He said, ‘No, no, she has enough.’”

After allegedly telling her about the grim incident, Holmes claimed her son said he and his girlfriend were going to go back to Switzerland and “she was going to have another baby and start all over again.”

Damion Comager struggled with mental illness and was diagnosed bipolar and schizophrenic as a child, his dad has said. His mom also said that Damion “has a mental illness and he was under a lot of pressure.”

But “It’s no excuse for what he did,” Holmes said. “Both of them have to pay for what they did. [The baby] was three months old. She was defenseless. She couldn’t fight back.

“I’m angry. I’m upset. I’m everything,” Holmes continued. “There are no words. I love that baby. She was a part of me.”

Still, she said, “my son loved his daughter.”

“He is still my child,” Holmes said of her son. “I still love him. He doesn’t need to be put in jail. He needs to be put in a mental facility and do his time. She needs to go to jail. I don’t know too much about her, but [she] sat up there and let that man kill [her] daughter.

“I love my son but at a certain age in life, you make your choices. He made that choice.”

A New York mom was shocked when her Ring camera revealed that her nanny, a once-trusted friend, had been beating and abusing her 2-year-old son.
Kristla Holmes checked her Ring camera while at work on Monday and watched a recording of babysitter Chantal Mason inside her Newburgh home tossing her infant on his back and slapping him, CBS News reports.
Mason could be heard yelling “Be quiet,” and “Lay your a– down and go to sleep,” at the sobbing 2-year-old.
Officials said the slapping went on for longer than the short clip aired by TV stations.
The camera also caught Mason resting her foot on the boy’s head as she lay on Holmes’ couch.
Holmes said the abuse and breach of trust served as a warning for parents to be cautious about who they leave their kids with.
“You can’t trust nobody. You cannot trust your kids’ godparents. You can’t trust a long friend. You can’t trust nobody,” she told the local outlet. “Watch your own kids. Protect your own kids.”

Holmes described Mason as a long-time family friend of 15 years who had been in charge of watching her kids before, someone she would have never suspected of hurting her children.

That all changed when Mason got the Ring alert, with the mother calling the babysitter to check up on her.

“She told me that he just woke up, she fed him, and he was laying on the couch watching TV,” Holmes said. “So when I checked the camera, that’s not what he was doing. He was hysterically crying.”

Holmes said she then watched on in horror as the Ring camera captured the abuse.

The frantic mother rushed home to her son, who suffered minor bruising and called the police, who arrested Mason for endangering the welfare of a child.

She was booked at the Orange County Jail, in Goshen, and released on Tuesday. Mason could not be immediately reached for comment.
