3 Florida teens killed were involved in 'illegal activity' with 3 murder suspects

One of the victim's phone had pictures in their phone of weapons and ammunition. They were believed to be smoking weed at a traphouse in Marion County. They planned to rob someone for weed, according to investigators.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. - The three teenage victims of a triple homicide in Florida were apparently involved in illegal activities with their three suspected killers before the murders, which unfolded in a flurry of gunfire, dumping of bodies and ditching of a car in a pond, court documents reveal.

The two suspects who have been arrested told police how the fatal shootings played out, according to their arrest affidavits.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said Friday two male suspects, ages 12 and 17, were arrested in the March 30 murders of 16-year-old Layla Silvernail, another 16-year-old girl and an unnamed 17-year-old male.

Police are searching for a third suspect, a 16-year-old boy, whom the 12-year-old suspect said opened fire on the unsuspecting victims, according to the affidavit.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said Friday that two boys – aged 12 and 17 – have been arrested in the alleged murders of three teenagers in a rural part of Marion County, and that detectives were looking for a third suspect – a 16-year-old boy who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Nefarious plans

In the affidavit, investigators describe the suspects' activities with the victims on the night of March 30, which included driving to a "trap house," smoking, "car hopping," and committing burglaries.

Detectives found photos on a confiscated phone showing one of the victims pictured with the suspects "displaying firearms and ammunition."

Police said Friday the victims had likely known the suspects for a short time. Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said the suspects eventually turned on the victims for an undisclosed reason, resulting in the alleged triple homicide.

Snapchat gun sale setup

A few hours before the killings, at least one of the victims appeared to have been involved in a robbery with the 12-year-old and 17-year-old shooting suspects, according to the affidavit.

An unidentified male told police he agreed over Snapchat to buy a gun through a friend of one of the victims around 6:30 p.m. March 30.

That male said he got into the backseat of Silvernail's white sedan, where "there were two Black males he does not know." Police said they determined those two Black males were likely the 12-year-old and 17-year-old shooting suspects.

The male witness took out $240 — presumably in exchange for the firearm — and one of the Black males in the backseat struck him in the cheek with the barrel of a gun and demanded the money, according to the affidavit.

The witness fled the car and told police one of the suspects fired a shot at him.

Triple shooting

At some point later that evening, the three shooting victims were in Silvernail's car with the 12-year-old and 17-year-old, according to the affidavit. Both of those shooting suspects told police the group then picked up the 16-year-old, whom the 12-year-old said he did not know and who was wearing a ski mask the entire time.

According to the affidavits, Silvernail was driving, the male victim was in the front passenger seat and the other teenage girl was in the trunk smoking, "by her own choice."

The group planned to rob someone for marijuana and was traveling through Ocala, according to the 17-year-old's account.

The 12-year-old, known by the nickname "35," told police the teens were driving toward Ocklawaha when the 16-year-old pulled out a handgun and shot the two victims who were in the front seats.

Silvernail's car then struck a garbage dumpster in the area of SE 183rd Avenue Road in Silver Springs. The owner of the dumpster called police at 10:48 p.m. and saw Silvernail bleeding.

A woman who lives in the area told police she heard four or five loud "pops" that sounded like gunshots and looked out her window and saw the sedan hit the dumpster, according to the affidavit. She told police a male then got into the driver’s seat and sped away.

The 12-year-old told police he then shot "the female victim," though it was not clear whether he was referring to Silvernail or the other teen girl. He said the 17-year-old forced him to shoot the unnamed girl "or his family would be killed," according to the affidavit.

The 12-year-old told police he did not think one of the victims was dead after he shot her.

The 17-year-old also told police he shot one of the victims "because she was still alive. She was going to snitch on us all. We was all going to go to jail for life."

The 16-year-old, known as "Reaper," then drove Silvernail's car and stopped to dump the male victim in a ditch, the 12-year-old told police. The three suspects then drove the car to a pond, where it was later found partially submerged.

After the shootings, Silvernail was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

"Because she was still alive. She was going to snitch on us all. We was all going to go to jail for life."

In the following days, investigators found the male victim's body in the ditch and the other teen girl in the trunk of Silvernail's vehicle.

Authorities said they found "voluminous amounts" of the victims' blood inside the vehicle and on one of the victims' phones.

The two juveniles who have been arrested are facing first-degree murder and robbery charges.

On Friday, Woods blamed societal and school failures for the tragedy.

"Our school districts, not just here, across this state and across this nation, need to stop minimizing the actions of their students. Hold them accountable. That's where the failure is," he said.

He said earlier during his press conference he does not know what the solution is, but, "the bad guy's going to get a gun no matter what laws you put in place."

Details About Murders of 3 Teens in Florida Revealed in Arrest Affidavits

Arrest affidavits for two boys charged in the murders of three Florida teens last week reveal more information about how the shootings went down.

crimeonline, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday it had arrested a 12-year-old and a 17-year-old for the murders, which stunned the rural community north of Orlando. They are still looking for a 16-year-old boy, and on Saturday announced that the United States Marshals and Florida Sheriff’s Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program had offered up to $5,000 each for information leading to his arrest.
The bodies of the three victims were found on three separate days. On the evening of March 30, 16-year-old Layla Silvernail was found critically wounded on the side of the road near a dumpster. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Silvernail’s car slowly hit the dumpster before it drove off again.

The following morning, a 17-year-old boy was found dead on the side of the road about a half mile away. He has not been named. And on April 1, deputies retrieved Silvernail’s car from a pond where it had been partially submerged and found another 16-year-old girl dead in the trunk. She was later identified by family members as Camille Quarles.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said that all six of the juveniles had been involved in criminal activity prior to the shooting, but he did not reveal details. WOFL obtained arrest affidavits for the two boys who were arrested, however, and those documents reveal the boys’ alleged confession.

Investigators say that the activities of the suspects and victims before the shootings including driving to a “trap house,” “smoking,” “car hopping,” and “committing burglaries,” the documents reveal. Photos on a confiscated phone show one of the victims with the suspects “displaying firearms and ammunition.”

A robbery earlier in the evening

And at least one of the victims was involved in a robbery with the 12-year-old and the 17-year-old suspects. The male victim of that robbery told detectives that he communicated with a friend of one of the victims over Snapchat and agreed to buy a gun at about 6:30 p.m. on March 30. The robbery victim said he got into the back seat of Silvernail’s vehicle with “two Black males he does not know” — likely the 12-year-old and 17-year-old, police wrote.

The robbery victim said he took out $240, and when he did, one of the Black males in the back set hit him on the cheek with a gun barrel and demanded the money. The victim said he fled the car and that one of the suspects fired a shot at him.

Later in the evening, the affidavits say, the three shooting victims and the 12-year-old and 17-year old suspects picked up the 16-year-old suspect. The younger suspect said he didn’t know the 16-year-old and that he wore a ski mask the entire time.

According to the 17-year-old, the group planned to rob someone for marijuana. Silvernail was driving, the 17-year-old male victim was in the front passenger seat, and Quarles was in the trunk smoking “by her own choice.”

‘We was all going to jail for life’

According to the 12-year-old, the group was traveling toward Ocklawaha when the 16-year-old in the ski mask pulled out a gun and shot Silvernail and the 17-year-old boy in the front seat. The car rolled into a garbage dumpster. The boy told police he shot “the female victim,” although the affidavit doesn’t make clear if he was referring to Silvernail or Quarles. He said the 17-year-old told him to shoot the girl “or his family would be killed,” according to the affidavit.

The boy said he didn’t think the victim he shot was dead after he shot her, and the 17-year-old said he shot one of the victims “because she was still alive. She was going to snitch on us all. We was all going to go to jail for life.”

The 16-year-old got behind the wheel of the car and drove about a half mile before he stopped to dump the male victim into a ditch, according to the 12-year-old. Then the group drove about nine miles away to a pond, where the vehicle was found partially submerged on April 1, with Quarles in the trunk.

The two suspects who have been arrested have been charged with first degree murder, although it is still unclear if they are being charged as adults. Until that determination is made, CrimeOnline will not identify them.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said Friday that two boys – aged 12 and 17 – have been arrested in the alleged murders of three teenagers in a rural part of Marion County and that detectives were looking for a third suspect – a 16-year-old boy who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

MARION COUNTY, Fla. - Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said Friday that two boys – aged 12 and 17 – have been arrested in the alleged murders of three teenagers in a rural part of Marion County and that detectives were looking for a third suspect – a 16-year-old boy who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Sheriff Woods said the two boys were arrested on Thursday under suspicion of first-degree, pre-meditated murder.

The 12-year-old was arrested at his home and the 17-year-old, identified as Robert Robinson, was already in juvenile custody after being arrested earlier by a different agency. Robinson was also booked under suspicion of robbery.

FOX 35 has decided not to name or show photos of the 12-year-old suspect because of his age.

TIMELINE: MARION COUNTY TRIPLE HOMICIDE

Last week, three teenagers – two 16-year-old girls and a 17-year-old boy – were found with deadly gunshot wounds in separate locations in Marion County over the span of three days.

  • Thursday, March 30: Deputies responded to a road near Forest Lakes Park in Ocklawaha, Florida, and found a 16-year-old girl shot on the side of the road. She was taken to the hospital where she later died. She was identified as Layla Silvernail.
  • Friday, March 31: Deputies responded to SE 94th Street and SE 188th Court and found a 17-year-old boy with gunshot wounds laying on the side of the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not identified by authorities as his family's request.
  • Saturday, April 1: Deputies responded to the area of Malauka Loop and Malauka Loop Trace and found a car partially submerged in a lake and a 16-year-old girl with gunshot wounds in the trunk of the car. The girl was pronounced dead. She was not identified by authorities at the request of her family.

Sheriff Woods said at some point all six individuals were in the same vehicle and believe that the shootings happened around the same time.

Two witnesses, according to court paperwork, told deputies that they heard the sound of gunshots and saw a vehicle drive into a dumpster, where Silvernail was eventually found.

Murders of 3 Florida teens could be result of 'wannabe gang,' sheriff says

A triple murder has shocked a small town in Marion County. The sheriff's office says they are looking at multiple suspects.

Is there a motive in the Marion County shootings?

Sheriff Woods has described the shooting as an isolated incident and cautioned that there was not a larger threat to the community nor was there a serial killer on the loose. He also shot down rumors that there was a fourth victim.

During his Friday press conference, Sheriff Woods said a possible motive in the shootings was robbery.

All six individuals – suspects and victims – knew each other and possibly were connected through unorganized neighborhood gangs. Woods previously referred to them as a possible "hybrid" or "wannabe gang."

"The investigators were able to determine that this group of juveniles were involved in committing burglaries and robberies, which they referred to as ‘a lick,'" he said, adding that detectives had no info that the shootings were because of a rivalry between the two groups.

"Each and every one of them, in some shape, way or form, was associated with a gang," he said.

"At some point, these three individuals turned on our three victims and murdered them."

"They fled the scenes, but left a lot of evidence in their wake," Sheriff Woods said.

Anyone with information on the teen's whereabouts was asked to contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies announced on Sunday that federal law enforcement arrested the third teenage suspect charged in three teen’s violent deaths. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office previously said that Tahj Brewton, 16, remained at large after Layla Silvernail, 16, Camille Quarles, 16, and a 17-year-old boy were each separately found shot.

Deputies now say that U.S. Marshals took him into custody on Saturday just south of Groveland, Florida, with the help of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. They did not specify a murder charge against him.

“Brewton was arrested on his outstanding warrants for carjacking with a firearm, aggravated assault, grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing or attempt to elude a law enforcement officer, and tampering with an electronic monitoring device,” they announced. “At this time, the homicide investigation is ongoing and additional charges are forthcoming.”

The sheriff’s office said on Friday that they arrested Robert Robinson, 17, and Christopher Atkins, 12, for the deaths. These two teenagers were charged with first-degree murder. Asked by a reporter if the juveniles would be charged as adults, Sheriff Billy Woods said the State Attorney’s Office was currently reviewing that. During the presser, he emphasized that Florida law empowered him to name each of the minor suspects and release their photos in advance of any decision about charging them as adults.

The name of the 17-year-old victim was not released under Marsy’s Law.

Robert Robinson, 17, Christopher Atkins, 12, and Tahj Brewton were named as murder suspects in the deaths of three teens.

As Law&Crime previously reported, deputies were searching for more information about Silvernail’s vehicle as seen on the night of March 30th and on the afternoon of April 1, when the vehicle was located. Authorities said Silvernail was found on the side of the road shot to death March 30. The next day, deputies found the murdered 17-year-old boy, according to the sheriff’s office. When Silvernail’s vehicle was found “partially submerged at the edge of a nearby body of water” on April 1, investigators found Quarles shot to death in the trunk.

12-year-old among suspects in killing of 3 teens in Florida

OCALA, Fla. (AP) — A teenager and a 12-year-old have been charged in the deaths of three teens whose bodies were found along a Florida roadside and in the trunk of a partially-submerged vehicle, authorities said Friday. Another teen is being sought.

Law enforcement officials were “shocked” by the young ages of the victims and alleged killers, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said at a news conference. The older suspect in custody is 17, and police are still searching for a 16-year-old.

The two suspects in custody are charged with first-degree murder. The state attorney’s office is reviewing the case to determine whether the suspects will be charged as adults. The Associated Press does not publish the names of juveniles unless they have been charged with adult crimes.

The shooting suspects and victims were all in a vehicle belonging to 16-year-old victim Layla Silvernail when the killings occurred, Woods said. Authorities have not released the names of the other two victims, a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. Woods said the three who died were in the vehicle on their own free will.

After the murder the 12 yr old went to school the next day.

Woods said the 12-year-old was arrested March 31 by Ocala police following an “affray” at school, and he was already in custody when charges were filed in the teens’ slayings.
The 17-year-old suspect was arrested at his home Thursday night.

Woods expressed frustration that juveniles are not being held accountable for their actions.

“We need to hold them accountable and then hope that we can change them,” he said. “They deserve the full extent of the law,”
