GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Police have arrested and charged three teenagers in connection to the death of a 74-year-old man.

Police found the body of Larry Eugene Brown
on Greenbriar Road - just off N. Church St. - July 29. Investigators say Brown was robbed and assaulted, around 5:30 a.m., while walking to the bus stop. He suffered, what police call, "significant" blunt force trauma to his head and died from his injuries.

Police say they received a Crime Stoppers tip that led to the arrest of 17-year-old D'Angelo Matthews. He is charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Matthews, a rising junior at Page High School, was 16 at the time of the murder and turned 17 Wednesday. He spent his birthday in court as he made his first appearance, via closed-circuit television, at the Guilford County Courthouse. A judge issued Matthews a court-appointed attorney, and did not set a bond for the suspect.

Police also charged two juveniles, a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Police said all three suspects are in custody.

Capt. Mike Richey, with the Greensboro Police Department, told WFMY News 2 the three teenagers were driving down the road when they decided to attack and rob Brown. Richey says the teenagers stole items of "minimum value."

Richey also said the department is investigating the group's possible connection to vandalism and petty theft in the area.

3 Greensboro teens indicted in July beating death, robbery of man

GREENSBORO — Three Greensboro teens accused of killing a man with a fire extinguisher over the meager contents in his pockets were indicted by a Guilford County grand jury this week.

Larry Eugene Brown, 74, of 133 Greenbriar Road Apt. A was killed July 29 while walking to the bus. He died of massive blunt force trauma to the head, according to police. An arrest warrant states Brown was struck with a fire extinguisher. He was robbed of his wallet, a flashlight, a cell phone and $3.

D’Angelo Nathaniel Matthews, 17, of 3503 Sherbourne Lane, is indicted on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was previously only charged with the first two counts.

“There was evidence to support the (additional) charge,” said Howard Neumann, Guilford County chief assistant district attorney who will be trying the case.

In addition to Matthews, Christopher Shakel Williams, 16, of 3616 Martin Ave., and Ketrellia Monaja Harris, 15, of 1326 Ogden St., are indicted on the same charges as Matthews. The trio is accused of conspiring to rob Brown that morning, then hitting and killing him with a fire extinguisher.
