A judge has found probable cause for Julia Barber to be held in the criminal wing of Saint Elizabeths Hospital on charges that she strangled and drowned her 6-year-old son in a bathtub.
As Barber entered the courtroom this morning, the judge asked how she was feeling. She replied that she was a little anxious.
That was all she said as prosecutors explained evidence against her in the July murder of her son, Don Miguel Barber.
In court on Friday, defense attorney Santha Sonenberg argued that Barber's admission of guilt
wasn't reliable because of her mental state. But prosecutor Deborah Sines said that Barber started hearing voices and rocking back and forth during her police interrogation only when her lies didn't work.
The judge says it's too early to tell whether Barber's mental problems were real or fake. That will be determined later. Barber will remain in the criminal ward until another hearing in December.
