Three people have died in a shooting at the Great Hills Trail near the Arboretum in northwest Austin. Everyone in the area was asked to shelter in place the afternoon of April 18.

AUSTIN, Texas — Three people have died in an "active attack" in northwest Austin, officials said Sunday afternoon.

Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) said just before noon April 18 that medics, Austin Fire Department and Austin Police Department crews were responding to the "active attack/shooter incident" in the 9600 block of Great Hills Trail near the Arboretum. KVUE's Tony Plohetski confirmed that the shooting scene is an apartment complex and that the initial call was of an active shooter situation.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler tweeted that the location of the shooting is the Arboretum Oaks Apartments at 9617 Great Hills Trail.
Austin Police Department Interim Chief Joe Chacon said a 911 call came in at approximately 11:42 a.m. for a "shoot/stab hotshot," the highest level priority call, in the area of Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway. The first officer was on scene at 11:46 a.m. At the same time, a "reverse 911 activation" was sent out to residents to let them know to shelter in place because there had been a shooting.

The suspected shooter is still at large, officials said. However, police said it appears to be an isolated domestic situation and there is no risk to the general public. While they are not in custody, police believe they know the identity of the suspect.

Medics who first arrived at the scene performed CPR on three people with gunshot wounds, but they died shortly after.

There are no reports of other patients at this time, according to ATCEMS. Eighteen ATCEMS response assets were on the scene as of just before 1 p.m.
As of 12:11 p.m., the scene remains active. Police are asking residents to shelter in place and avoid the area. Loop 360 is shut down in both directions from Spicewood Springs to U.S. 183.

An individual at the Best Buy in the area told KVUE that everyone inside was sheltering in place.

ATCEMS said around 1:30 p.m. that any 911 calls for medical response in the immediate vicinity will be handled by a medic in an alternate response model other than an ambulance and delays may occur.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

LIVE: Police conducting 'fugitive search' for at-large suspect identified as former sheriff's detective

Updated: 4:57 PM CDT April 18, 2021

AUSTIN, Texas — Three people were killed in an "active attack" in northwest Austin Sunday morning, officials confirmed. The suspect remains at large, though police believe this is an isolated domestic situation and there is no risk to the general public.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted as of 4:45 p.m.

KVUE's Tony Plohetski confirmed that the shooting scene was an apartment complex in the area. Austin Mayor Steve Adler tweeted that the location of the shooting was the Arboretum Oaks Apartments at 9617 Great Hills Trail.

When officers arrived, Chacon said they located three people who were injured. Austin-Travis County EMS said the individuals had suffered gunshot wounds and medics performed CPR, but all three died shortly after.

Chacon said the victims were two adult women and one adult man, but their identities have not yet been released. Initial reports were that a child was also involved in the incident in some way, but the child has been located and is safe.

The suspected shooter, who is still at large, has been tentatively identified as 41-year-old Stephen Nicholas Broderick. In a press conference at 4:45 p.m. on April 18, Chacon said the search had transitioned into a "fugitive search." He is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, sunglasses and a baseball cap. Broderick is pictured below:

Chacon confirmed in a 4:45 p.m. press conference on April 18 that Broderick was a former Travis County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Records show that Broderick has a pending felony charge for sexual assault of a child. He was booked in jail last June and was released 16 days later after posting bail,
according to KVUE's partners at the Austin American-Statesman.

Chacon said police do not know what direction Broderick may have traveled in and they do not know if he fled in a vehicle or on foot. Authorities also don't know what sort of weapon was used or what sort Broderick may still have in his possession.

Many law enforcement officers are on the scene looking for him, both on the ground and in helicopters.

Chacon said there is concern that Broderick may take a hostage and may be sheltered somewhere himself, waiting for law enforcement to leave. Chacon stressed that the danger of the situation is still high, however, it is believed that Broderick knew the victims and targeted them.

As of 3 p.m., the scene remains active, though it is no longer considered an "active shooter" scene. Police are continuing to urge residents to shelter in place and to call their neighbors to check on them. Anyone with any information is urged to call 911.

Agencies assisting with this investigation include APD, the Austin Fire Department, ATCEMS, the local chapter of the FBI, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Round Rock Police Department. The APD is offering $1,000 for information leading to arrest of Broderick. Tipsters can remain anonymous. Call 512-974-TIPS (8477) or email homicide.apd@austintexas.gov.

City Councilmember Alison Alter, who represents northwest Austin, released a statement on Twitter saying in part, "We await more details, but common sense gun violence prevention is possible & it is necessary. Prayers are not enough. We need state/federal leaders to treat gun violence like the public health crisis it is."

Maybe they need common sense "dick violence" laws for the public health crisis it is.

ELGIN, Texas — A Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) detective has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a child, according to court documents.

Stephen Broderick, 40,
was arrested by the U.S. Marshals and booked on June 6. As of June 17, Broderick remains in the Travis County jail under a $100,000 bond.

According to court documents, a TCSO child abuse detective was called to Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin on June 3 in reference to a sexual assault that occurred in Elgin, Texas. The 16-year-old victim had reported to her mother that she had been assaulted that same afternoon by Broderick.

Officials reviewed the victim's sexual assault forensic exam, which documented certain injuries. The girl also participated in a forensic interview at the Bastrop County Child Advocacy Center. Officials said these statements corroborated injuries documented in her exam notes.

Broderick has charged with sexual assault of a child, family violence, which is a first-degree felony.

The sheriff's office said Broderick has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

The suspect in the Texas shooting that left three dead Sunday is a former sheriff’s office detective who had been charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, according to a report.

Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41 — who is still being sought in the deadly shooting spree in Austin — retired from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office last year after being charged and jailed for allegedly molesting the girl, the Austin American-Statements reported.

Broderick was arrested by US Marshals on June 6, three days after the teenager reported that he assaulted her in a home in Elgin, Texas, the newspaper said at the time.

Broderick was ordered held on $100,000 bail in the case and placed on administrative leave without pay, the American-Statements said Sunday.

He was held in jail for 16 days before he posted a reduced bail amount of $50,000.

Broderick’s wife filed for divorce and obtained an order of protection after his arrest, according to court records reviewed by the outlet.

He resigned from his job as a detective with the sheriff’s office after his release.

Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon did not identify the three victims in Sunday’s shootings but described them as two women and a man.

Chacon said cops were called to the scene at 11:42 a.m. and found all three had been shot. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

He said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police and the FBI have issued “shelter in place” orders in the area.

The three people allegedly gunned down by a former sheriff’s detective in Austin, Texas, were his wife, teen daughter and her high school football star boyfriend, according to reports.

Alyssa Broderick and Willie Simmons III, a standout linebacker who had signed with the University of North Texas, were identified Monday by the Elgin Independent School District, KXAN reported.

The girl’s mother, Amanda Broderick, also was killed in the attack Sunday, according to 13WHAM reporter Kris Betts, who cited Austin police.

Alyssa, who had accused her father of sexually assaulting her when she was 16, was known as a star athlete at school.

“She was an excellent student and athlete, enrolled in our Early College High School program and played on our girls’ basketball team,” Elgin schools Superintendent Jodi Duron told KXAN about Alyssa.

Her boyfriend, a captain of the high school football team, had signed to play at the University of North Texas.

“He was an exceptional young man and leader among his peers,” Duron said, adding that the athlete was a National Honor Society member and “represented the very best of Elgin ISD.”

“The Elgin ISD community grieves the loss of these two young, promising souls,” Duron said.

Simmons committed to UNT in April and signed with the Mean Green during the early signing period in December 2020, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported.

As a junior, he was an unanimous first-team All-District 13-5A selection and waited for a scholarship offer from a program that competes on the Football Bowl Subdivision level, according to the news outlet.

“North Texas was an easy decision because of the facilities and the coaches,” Simmons said after he committed, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported. “I felt the love. There was no doubt in my mind when they gave me an offer.”

On Sunday night, UNT coaches and players took to Twitter to remember the young man.

“Prayers to the Simmons family and all families affected,” UNT tight ends coach Adrian Mayes wrote on Twitter. “What an unbelievable kid! Intelligent, hard working and passionate! Going to miss you! #RIP9.”

At least three dead in apparent ‘domestic situation’ in Austin, Texas

The suspect was left largely unsupervised by the criminal justice system months after his daughter and his wife claimed in sworn affidavits that they were afraid he would hurt them, the Austin American-Statesman reported Monday.

He spent 16 days behind bars last summer on charges of sexually assaulting a child family member, according to the paper.

On June 22, Broderick posted bail, which was set at $50,000, and was ordered not contact or go within 200 feet of his daughter. He also was ordered to wear a GPS tracking device.

On Nov. 5, a Travis County judge ordered the removal of the device after Broderick’s lawyer argued in a written motion he had worn the monitor for 142 days with no substantial violations, the outlet reported.

State District Judge Karen Sage agreed, a decision that left the former detective largely unsupervised months after his wife, who had filed for divorce, and daughter voiced their fears.

Sage told the Austin American-Statesman on Sunday that she usually agrees to remove tracking devices when a defendant has exhibited a pattern of compliance and has not had any violations.

The judge — who left in place Broderick’s no-contact and distancing requirements – told the paper she rarely keeps defendants on GPS tracking for more than 90 days if they have been compliant.

“He had been on GPS for (five) months with no violations,” she said. “It’s a pretty common thing for me to do, frankly.”

According to court documents cited by the paper, while Broderick was barred from contact with his daughter, he still had visitation rights to see his son once a month.

“I’m afraid he will try to hurt me or my children, because these allegations have come out and he may lose his career,” Amanda Broderick said in an application for a protective order after his arrest.

“Stephen has prior military experience and is SWAT trained. If he wanted to hurt someone, he would know how,” she added, the American-Statesman reported.

On July 6, prosecutors filed a motion to raise Broderick’s bond, alleging that he had sent an email accusing Amanda of a “cash grab” and attached several images depicting her unclothed and engaged in sexual acts.

Sage granted the motion and increased the bond to $75,000, the report said.

Alyssa said in the application for a protective order that she felt unsafe with her dad out of jail.

“I felt safe after my dad had been arrested and he was in jail, but now that he’s out I don’t feel safe,” she wrote.

“I’m afraid that to him, a protective order will be just a piece of paper. I’m worried that he’ll come after my family and try to take my brother. I’m afraid that he might hurt me or my mom for coming forward,” the teen added.

Lytza Rojas, an attorney for Broderick, declined to comment to the American-Statesman.

The Austin Police Department did not immediately respond to questions posed by The Post about the crime.

Ex-cop Stephen Broderick reportedly arrested in killings of wife, daughter, boyfriend
By Yaron Steinbuch
April 19, 2021 | 9:27am | Updated

The former sheriff’s detective who allegedly killed his wife, teen daughter and her high school football star boyfriend was reportedly arrested Monday morning while in possession of a pistol.

Stephen Broderick, 41, was collared near Manor, a city about 12 miles northeast of Austin, after cops received a 911 call about a man walking near US Highway 290, KVUE’s Tony Plohetski reported in a tweet.

Broderick was arrested without incident some 20 hours after the shooting, he added.

The Manor Police Department said the suspect had a handgun but that no shots were fired at the time of his arrest, KXAN reported.

He was captured between Manor and Elgin on Old Kimbro Road just south of Highway 290 after police received calls reporting a suspicious person.

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office – where Broderick had worked as a detective — took the lead in the arrest with the assistance of Manor police, according to the news outlet.

Broderick is suspected of killing his wife, Amanda Broderick, teen daughter, Alyssa, and Willie Simmons III, a standout linebacker who had signed with the University of North Texas, according to reports.

He retired from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office last year after being charged and jailed for allegedly molesting a 16-year-old, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Broderick was also previously an investigator with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, KXAN reported.

Texas shooting: fugitive in custody after three people killed in Austin

Former sheriff’s deputy Stephen Broderick was arrested without incident Monday morning
Associated Press  in Austin
Mon 19 Apr 2021 09.47 EDT
A former sheriff’s deputy in Texas was taken into custody on Monday following a manhunt that began after three people were fatally shot in Austin, authorities said.
Police said Stephen Broderick, 41, was arrested without incident about 7.30am along a rural road in Manor, an Austin suburb, Manor police chief Ryan Phipps said. He had a pistol in his waistband, Phipps said.
Police had received two phone calls about a suspicious person matching Broderick’s description, Phipps said.
A manhunt was launched on Sunday and residents were warned to shelter in place.
“The victims were all known to this suspect,” Interim Austin police chief Joseph Chacon said, adding that Broderick was a former deputy with the Travis county sheriff’s office, which is based in Austin.
The Travis county district attorney, Jose Garza, said Broderick had been arrested for sexual assault of a child last June and was released on $50,000 bond. He said the district attorney’s office on Sunday filed a motion to revoke that bond and was actively supporting law enforcement.
A sheriff’s spokeswoman, Kristen Dark, said Broderick, a property crimes detective, resigned after the arrest. It was also reported that Broderick’s wife filed for a protective order and divorce shortly after his arrest.
Chacon said Broderick was suspected in the killing of two Hispanic women and one Black man. He said Broderick knew the victims but didn’t elaborate on how or provide a motive for the shootings. Chacon also said a child was involved but had been located and was safe.
Brenda Torres said she was driving by when she saw a little boy flag down a car and a Black man lying facedown on the ground.
“I saw the little boy point down the street,” Torres said. “There was someone lying on the ground. I thought someone had just fallen down or something. As my light turns green and I’m driving, I see cop car after cop car after cop car rushing toward where I just was.”
Chacon said the three people were not shot in a building but did not give any further details. Following the shooting, there was a large presence of emergency responders at the scene, including dozens of police cars, several ambulances, two Swat trucks and two police helicopters. Later, law enforcement began leaving the area.
Josh Katzowitz, who had been shopping at a nearby Trader Joe’s, said police and ambulances came “pouring in” to the area as he was leaving. He didn’t hear any shooting.
“The cops had their guns out,” he said. “Some had pistols, some had rifles and they were strapping on bulletproof vests. There were all of a sudden ambulances, sirens and police cars. There were cops coming from everywhere.”

In June 2020, Stephen Broderick, formerly a detective with the Travis County Sheriff's Office, was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a child. According to court documents, Broderick has been indicted with nine counts of sexual assault of a child, all of which happened with one child [his daughter].

Court documents also show he allegedly strangled a family member, and has been indicted on three counts of family violence assault.

He had an ankle monitor when he was released following the June 2020 charge, but it was later taken off.

The report states that Broderick's bail conditions required him to surrender all firearms and not obtain any new ones.
Broderick's wife applied for a protective order after his arrest, saying she was worried for her and her children's safety.

"I'm afraid he will try to hurt me or my children, because these allegations have come out and he may lose his career," she said in the application. "Stephen has prior military experience and is SWAT trained. If he wanted to hurt someone, he would know how."

Broderick's daughter stated in the application for a protective order that she also felt unsafe with her father out of jail.

"I felt safe after my dad had been arrested and he was in jail, but now that he's out I don't feel safe," she wrote. "I'm afraid that to him, a protective order will be just a piece of paper. I'm worried that he'll come after my family ... I'm afraid that he might hurt me or my mom."

That protective order was approved in August 2020. In that same month, they were divorced, paperwork shows.

Broderick is now being held in jail without bail after the deadly shootings.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective who allegedly shot and killed three people near the Arboretum Oak Apartments before leading police on a nearly 24-hour search could soon take a plea deal, according to court documents.

Stephen Broderick is charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of his adopted daughter, Alyssa Broderick; ex-wife, Amanda Broderick; and Alyssa's boyfriend, Willie Simmons III. Victims’ family members say he is expected to plead guilty to capital murder, carrying the punishment of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“I want him to realize that he took a piece of my heart,” Charlene Ramirez, the mother of Amanda and grandmother of Alyssa, said.

The family said they feel the justice system failed them in this case.
