Death Row Inmate Dies Playing Basketball

A condemned San Quentin State Prison inmate died Saturday after collapsing while playing basketball in the prison's exercise yard, according to prison officials.
Paul Madison Brown, 38, fell to the ground around 11 a.m. Saturday, according to prison Sgt. Eric Messick.
Prison staff carried Brown on a stretcher to the exercise yard's security gate then called for an ambulance, Messick said. Brown was rushed
o Marin General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:57 a.m.
The cause of Brown's death is still under investigation and will be released pending autopsy results. "We have no evidenc
e
f injury or foul play at this time," Messick said.
However, he adde
d, "They're going to interview everyone that was on the yard."
Brown had been on San Quentin's Death Row since November of 1990.
Messick said the inmate was convicted of two murder/robberies -- one that occurred in Los Angeles County on May 30, 1987 and a second that occurred two days later.
