Benbrika terror trial hears of 'fishing' trip to Eden

June 16, 2008 02:22pm

A TRIP to the coastal village of Eden by members of an alleged terror cell was for fishing, not terrorist training, a Victorian court has heard.

The Victorian Supreme Court trial of 12 terror suspects heard it was a typical boys' weekend where the group fished, played footy and had a barbecue.

The evidence came from Broadmeadows man Bashir Arabi, 29, the first defence witness who was giving evidence for his long time fishing companion Shoue Hammoud, 28, of Hadfield.

Mr Arabi, a team leader at a Broadmeadows car part manufacturer, said the men stayed in a NSW camping ground near the beach.

We went there on a fishing trip to get away," Mr Arabi said.

"That is
all it was, a fishing trip."

Photos shown to the jury showed Mr Arabi and Hammoud standing on rocks, apparently fishing.

Lawyers for several other defendants including the group's alleged leader Abdul Nacer Benbrika indicated to the jury today that they would not be calling any evidence.
