Officer shoots teenage robbery suspect

A 14-year-old boy is charged with attempted murder of a Montgomery police officer following a failed robbery at a Mobile Highway convenience store early Wednesday morning.

During a pursuit, police -- reportedly in self-defense -- shot the boy three times. The teen was wounded in the arm, abdomen and thigh.

The teen also is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, as are two other boys. Police declined to release the wounded teen's name because of his age, but said he is in stable condition at Jackson Hospital.

, address unavailable, 16, who is being charged as an adult, and a 15-year-old boy also have been arrested in the incident. Alabama law says 16-year-olds who commit a violent crime can be c

harged as an adult, while 15-year-olds who commit
a violent crime have to face the juvenile justice system first.

Police also would not release the name of the officer who fired the shots, citing an inquiry by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, but said he is expected to return to duty later today after having received counseling and having been given some time off. ABI spokeswoman Doris Teague said a report will be issued to Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks when the investigation in completed.

Mayor Bobby Bright and Police Chief John Wilson later Wednesday afternoon supported the officer's actions.

"I think he did an excellent job," Wilson said.

"Nobody likes to see anybody shoot anybody, but based on what I've been told, the o
ther kid got out of the car with a gun and pointed it at the officer -- and the officer did what he needed to do," he said.

Bright said that, based on the information he has received, h
e se
es no evidence of police wrongdoing.

"All of the circumstances surrounding the activit
y indicated to me up front that the police officer acted within reason and within the line and scope of his duty -- and of course defending himself, too," the mayor said. "The police officer was fortunate that he was not himself shot and injured or killed. You can't hesitate, because it's either you or the police officer under the circumstances. The police officers are out there to help protect us."

According to police spokesman Lt. Huey Thornton, at 1:34 a.m. police officers went to the Stop N Go convenience store, located at 4715 Mobile Highway (U.S. 31) and just south of U.S. 80, in response to a report of possible crime.

An incident report about the robbery wasn't ava
ilable for inspection Wednesday.

Police reports did indicate a robbery at the convenience store had been reported at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday. The report indicated two teenagers -- one bra
ndishing
a gun -- robbed the story and fled on foot.

Thornton said the night clerk saw the same pair returning early Wednesday mornin
g, but locked the door, and that the pair ran away. He said officers saw the teens running toward a nearby apartment complex and followed them, and that the canine officer, who was driving through the neighborhood, saw the 14-year-old running toward him.
