Suspect held in fatal fire at Detroit apartment
DETROIT (AP) -- A woman trying to "scare" another woman who owed her money for drugs set fire to a 46-unit apartment building, police said. A 4-year-old boy and a 30-year-old woman were killed and at least 11 people were injured.
I'll bet they were scared sho' nuff!
The 46-year-old woman was arrested late Sunday and was expected to be arraigned Monday on charges that could include two counts of first-degree murder, police spokesman James Tate said.
The blaze apparently started about 6:30 a.m. Sunday on the fourth floor and spread quickly. Flames and thick black smoke trapped many residents, forcing some to jump from windows.
The 4-year-old died fr
om smoke inhalation after being rescued, Detroit Fire Lt. Kwaku Atara said. Investigato
rs found the 30-year-old woman's body several hours later, said Fire Chief William Fairweather.
Injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to broken bones from jumping from windows, and there also were "a number of walking wounded," Atara said. He said a firefighter was among the injured, and eight residents required hospital treatment.
The suspect told police late Sunday that another resident of the building owed her money for crack cocaine, Tate said. The woman confessed to setting the fire but said she only meant to "scare" the other woman and did not mean to harm anybody, he said.
Neither woman was among those injured, Tate said.
About 30 of the 46 apartments were rented, but firefighters did not know how many people were in the building at the time of the fire. Crews took cadaver dogs through the building after it was extinguished at about 10:30 a.m. and used a
tena
nt list to determine if anyone was missing, Atara said.
"There were a lot of rescues made, hand ladders put up, guys d
id a valiant effort, but the fire gained a little headway on us when we were in rescue mode," Fairweather said.
The American Red Cross and Salvation Army were helping the homeless residents.
Is it any wonder why parts of Detroit literally look like a war zone?
