Valencia County prosecutors on Thursday morning described for jurors the horrific details of a woman’s murder during the trial of the man believed to have instigated the killing.

Angel Esquibel and five others were accused of dousing Barbara Lumsey with lighter fluid and leaving her in the trunk of a car that was set afire.

Her body was discovered November 4th, 2005 in the car on a remote road in Valencia County.

“He hosed down the car with lighter fluid," said prosecutor Steven Scott. “He dropped Barabara headfirst. He orchestrated the killing, the slaughter, the murder of Barbara Lumsey in one of the most heinous ways you could kill another human being."

Sheila Bahney was convicted of second-degree murder and kidnapping in the Lumsey case in January. Her husband, Thomas Bahney, pleaded no contest to first-degree murder.

Jessica Cavasos and Anthony Sanchez have pleaded guilty to their involvement in Lumsey's death. The case against Patricia Sipes is pending.

Esquibel was arrested in Albuquerque following a SWAT standoff and charged with murder, kidnapping and arson.

LOS LUNAS, N.M. -- The trial of a man accused of burning a woman to death in Valencia County came to a sudden end this morning when Angel Esquibel signed a plea agreement in open court.
Esquibel, known as "El Diablo," surprised the court by entering a no contest plea to murder.

Testimony in Esquibel's jury trial began Thursday, but this morning it ended abruptly when he signed a plea agreement that gives him a minimum of 30 years in prison and possibly 30 more.

Prosecutors said Esquibel was the ringleader in a group of people who beat up and then burned Barbara Valdez-Lumsey alive in the trunk of her car in November of 2005.

Angel Esquibel and Lumsey's family learned his sentence around 11:30 Friday morning.

Eight of Lumsey's family members spoke at the sentencing hearing, saying she had much to live for, and was a recovering alcoholic.

Esquibel pleaded no contest a few days into his trial in March. In July, he tried to take back his plea, but the judge wouldn't let him.

Today, Esquibel told Lumsey's family he was innocent and that when Judgment Day comes, the will see the truth.

Lumsey's brother said there is no heaven for Esquibel.

Six people are accused of helping Esquibel. Lumsey's family said they would attend all of the court appearances for the four who still have them.
