Otto Warmbier, a U.S. citizen who was freed last week after more than a year in North Korean detention, has died. Doctors who examined him after his return to said he had "extensive loss of tissue" in all parts of his brain.

Warmbier, 22, had been in a coma since coming home to the United States last week.

His parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said in a statement that their son died on Monday afternoon. "Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today," they said.

"When Otto returned to Cincinnati late on June 13th he was unable to speak, unable to see and unable to react to verbal commands. He looked very uncomfortable – almost anguished," the family said. "Although we would never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed – he was at peace."

They added: "He was home and we believe he could sense that."

On Thursday, as The Two-Way reported, Daniel Kanter from the University of Cincinnati Health told reporters that Warmbier was suspended in a state of "unresponsive wakefulness."

The University of Virginia student was arrested in Pyongyang in January 2016, and as we have reported, was "accused of trying to steal a propaganda poster from an employee area of his hotel."

He was swiftly sentenced to 15 years in prison and hard labor. His medical condition was a surprise to U.S. officials and his family, who were told about it earlier this month.

Otto Warmbier's body showed no signs of torture, coroner's report says

A coroner’s report on Otto Warmbier revealed small scars, but no signs of torture, were found on the American student’s body -- the shocking news coming hours after his parents’ detailed the horrifying shape Warmbier was in after 15 months imprisonment in North Korea.

The Hamilton County Coroner’s examination released by the Cincinnati Enquirer on Tuesday showed Warmbier had at least 10 “small scars” on his body and half of them appeared pale, meaning they healed over time. Another scar on his sternum appeared to be a “tracheotomy scar” to insert a breathing tube.

The report stated Warmbier’s body was “well-developed, well-nourished” and had no signs of torture. However, Warmbier’s parents, Fred and Cindy, told "Fox & Friends" earlier Tuesday about the moment they saw their 22-year-old son with mangled teeth, jerking violently and moaning on a stretcher with a feeding tube coming out of his nose.
:p
“We walked over to the plane, the engines are still humming, they had just landed…when we got halfway up the steps we heard this howling, involuntary, inhuman sound,” Fred Warmbier said. “We weren’t really certain what it was.”

He added: “Otto had a shaved head, he had a feeding tube coming out of his nose, he was staring blankly into space, jerking violently. He was blind. He was deaf. As we looked at him and tried to comfort him it looked like someone had taken a pair of pliers and rearranged his bottom teeth.”

The coroner's report, however, indicated Warmbier’s teeth were “natural and in good repair.” :rolleyes:His nose and ears had “no remarkable altercation.” The old scars could also have been caused during athletic events or obtained during prison, but no signs specifically indicated that, Milwaukee County coroner Brian Peterson told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

North Korea ordered to pay $500 million in Otto Warmbier's death:p

Updated on: December 24, 2018 / 4:30 PM

A federal judge on Monday ordered North Korea to pay more than $500 million in a wrongful death suit filed by the parents of Otto Warmbier, an American college student who died shortly after being released from that country. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in Washington ruled that North Korea should pay damages to Fred and Cindy Warmbier, the parents of the University of Virginia student.

Warmbier was a University of Virginia student who was visiting North Korea with a tour group when he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March 2016 on suspicion of stealing a propaganda poster. He died in June 2017, shortly after he returned to the U.S. in a coma and showing apparent signs of torture while in custody.

The judgment is largely a symbolic victory for now, since there is no mechanism to force North Korea to pay.

Fred and Cindy Warmbier said they were thankful that that the court found the government of Kim Jong Un "legally and morally" responsible for their son's death.
