$1 million bond set for slashing suspect

Written by: Jason Clarke

A Chickasha man is in jail on a $1 million bond after trying to take the area's drug problem into his own hands.

Kenny Don Hurd, 37, was presented to the District Court at his arraignment yesterday by his attorney Ryland Rivas.

Hurd allegedly used a razor to slash a man across the back, from shoulder to waist and down to the bone, on Chickasha's east side early Monday morning.

The victim, described by officers as a homeless black man, survived the attack and was treated by EMS before being transported to the Grady Memorial Emergency Room.

In defense of his request fo
a $1 million bond, Assistant District Attorney Robert Beal noted the severity of the crime, the potential threat to the community, and Hurd's previous convictions.

Substantiating the threat to

the community, Beal read a supplement to the Ch
ickasha Police report made by Dispatcher Brooke Harris.

According to the supplement, Crime Stoppers received a call at 10:50 p.m. Sunday complaining that the cops were focusing on methamphetamine busts and ignoring all the crack dealers on the east side. The anonymous caller also complained that the recent laws concerning the chemicals used in making meth were forcing the cranksters onto crack.

The supplement continues to say that at 2:45 a.m. on Monday, 12 minutes after Chickasha Police responded the scene of the slashing, Crime Stoppers received another call. The caller identified himself as the one who called earlier and stated that he had just cut a crack dealer's back on the east side. The caller reportedly then said that the police ar
en't doing anything about the crack dealers and that he would cut up every one of them.

Beal alleged that the calls made to Crime Stoppers were made by Hurd, and were a clear indication that
he
might commit further violence if released
.

While Beal said that he was not fond of crack dealers himself taking justice into your own hands is not the way to resolve it.

Rivas said that he did not believe his client was a threat to the community. He quipped that if the state thought he was a danger to the crack dealers, they could put a restriction on his bond preventing him from going on the east side of town.

Special District Judge Timothy Brauer agreed that there was a threat to the safety of the community and granted the state's request.

Hurd has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and with his former convictions he could receive 20 years to life if convicted. A preliminary hearing has been set for July 21.
