Infamous Georgia Point Guard Arrested Again

Wednesday, May 12, 2004

The Georgia basketball player whose claims started an NCAA investigation of the team has been arrested again -- this time, for pushing a 46-year-old woman.

Twenty-four-year-old Tony Cole is charged with misdemea
or simple battery and giving false information to police after an altercation at Georgia State University last Friday.

It was at least the sixth time the former point guard has been arrested in the p
ast
three years, including five times in Georgia.

According to a police report, Cole was visiting a Georgia
State dorm resident when he got in an argument with 46-year-old Valene Gresham, who was helping her daughter, Valerie, move out of her dorm room.

Valene Gresham told Cole, "You better give me some respect," and Cole replied, "I don't have to give you (expletive)."

The report said Cole pushed Gresham and pointed his finger in her face. Police say Cole provided an officer with two different names and birthdays.

Cole's accusations that former Georgia coaches Jim Harrick and Jim Harrick Junior paid his expenses and gave him credit for academic work he didn't do started the investigation by the NCAA.

The NCAA hasn't yet announced pen
alties against the school, but the probe led to the school withdrawing from the 2003 postseason and Harrick's resignation.

Officials said Cole also was wanted in Athens for writing a bad chec
k and Gwinn
ett County for failure to appear in court for a speeding ticket.
