'Hitler' watercolours up for sale

A series of watercolours believed to have been painted by Adolf Hitler are to be sold by a Cornish auction house.

The 21 watercolours and sketches were discovered in a battered suitcase in a Belgian attic, close to where Hitler served during the First World War.

Jefferys Auctioneers said steps were taken to prove their authenticity without success.

The paintings, which are similar to other works by Hitler, are expected to fetch up to ?3,000 on 26 September.

A spokesman for the auction house said a number of the works bore the dictator's distinctive signature.

They vary from postcard size to 10ins by 8i
ns (25cm by 20cm).

The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted the auctioneer after reading of their sale of a single Hitler watercolour last year.

The auction will take place in Lostwithiel.

Watercolor of the Votivkirche cathedral in Vienna sells through www.manions.com

“I’ve seen a few of his paintings over the years and they always amaze me," said Manion’s representative John Conway. “It’s just one of those aspects of WWII history that you hear about, but almost don’t really believe it could be true."

It is a known fact that the failed German dictator had aspired to be an artist, prior to the megalomaniacal activity for which he will always be remembered, but his paintings do portray an idiosyncratic side of evil.

“This is quite an interesting glimpse into the soul of one of the most infamous figures in world history," said Conway in a previous release about the initial offering. “To look at these renditions, one would think the hand that held the brush belonged to a gentle man – but history has revealed the opposite."

While Manion’s International has sold other original Hitler paintings in the past, this is the highest price the company had seen one reach. The company is currently featuring another work by Hitler, a pen and ink watercolor, entitled "Shelter in Fournes", which is referenced in "Adolf Hitler the Unknown Artist" by Billy E. Price.
