District Complaints

U.S. Department of Education officials are in Hinds County this week investigating a complaint from an incident that occurred in May 2004. At their request, the Hinds County Citizens for Public Education held a meeting Tuesday night at the New Mt. Zion M.B. Church. The group's organizer says the officials wanted an opportunity to meet with parents in person and hear their complaints. No Department of Education officials were on hand but about 50 parents attended the meeting and voiced concerns about unfair treatment of black children in the Hinds Co. School System. The group alleges that black children have been abused, arrested, or have received other un
deserved discipline.

Organizers
hope the meeting Tuesday night will be another productive step in their mission to get Hinds Co. Superintendent Phyfa Eiland removed from her office.

Spokeswoman for the organization, Jo Gregory says, "we will not stop until she is removed from that office. She is not the person Hinds County needs in that position. She cannot do the job."

Dr. Eiland sent a statement fia fax to News Channel 12. It reads, "Hinds County School District is fair and equitable in its treatment of all students. The school district has a policy for addressing any grievance a parent may have, and all parents and their children are provided with due process rights. We also insist on a safe and orderly environment in all of our classrooms so that teachers may provide quality instruction to all students."
