Jewish Student From Maryland Stabbed To Death In Chicago

Anat Kimchi, z’l, of Maryland, was stabbed in the back in broad daylight over the weekend while on a visit to friends in Chicago and died from her wounds.
Kimchi, 31, a resident of Montgomery Country, was a doctoral student in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice :rolleyes2: at the University of Maryland. She is the daughter of Avi and Chava Kimchi and a sister to Itamar and Ofer Kimchi.

Kimchi was found on a Chicago sidewalk at about 4 p.m., bleeding from her neck. She was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The site of the crime was was in a remote area of downtown near a homeless encampment. Police Supt. David Brown said they suspect the perpetrator was a homeless person who hid in the bushes before committing the grisly crime. It is unclear why Kimchi was in the area.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said on Monday that Chicago police know who committed the stabbing and are “scouring the various homeless encampments downtown.”
“We know who he is. We’ve got a good film of him. We believe he’s a homeless individual,” Lightfoot said. “It’s awful. No question about it.”
Kimchi was known as a brilliant student and was a prestigious flagship fellow at Maryland
“She was one of our best students, just about to embark on a professional career,” Gary Lafree, chairman of the university’s Criminology and Criminal Justice Department, told The Chicago Tribune.
“The University of Maryland grieves the loss of Anat Kimchi, a brilliant young scholar,” the university said in a statement. “We offer our condolences to her friends and family during this difficult time.”

The man suspected of fatally stabbing a Maryland grad student in the Loop over the weekend is also wanted for two other attacks in downtown Chicago.

A community alert describes the attacker as in his 30s and possibly homeless. Police said he is Black, between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11 and has dreadlocks or was wearing a bandana that looked like dreadlocks.

Man charged with fatally stabbing Maryland grad student in the Loop

Tony Robinson was arrested Thursday after he was identified as the person that stabbed Anat Kimchi, 31, around 4 p.m. last Saturday in the 400 block of South Wacker Drive.

A 41-year-old man is facing murder charges in the fatal stabbing of a Maryland grad student in the Loop last weekend.

Tony Robinson was arrested Thursday after he was identified as the person that stabbed Anat Kimchi, 31, around 4 p.m. last Saturday in the 400 block of South Wacker Drive, Chicago police said. She was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Kimchi had been working on her doctorate in criminology and criminal justice at the University of Maryland. Her family said she was in Chicago visiting friends.

Robinson was charged with one county each of first-degree murder, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated robbery in a public place, aggravated robbery with great bodily harm and aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon, police said.

He was expected in bond court Saturday.

Investigators were able to identify Robinson through video surveillance of the attack and with the help of a cooperating witness, police said.

Robinson was also linked to two other armed robberies where he attacked a woman by approaching her from behind and hitting them with an object.

On June 10, the man struck a 25-year-old woman in the head from behind as she walked on a sidewalk in the 500 block of South Franklin Street around 9:30 p.m. The woman was hospitalized in fair condition.
Around 7:10 p.m. June 13, he struck a 50-year-old woman with a “long heavy object” as she walked in the first block of East Ida B. Wells Drive. The woman dropped her personal items and the man took them, then hit her two more times before he fled, police said. The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with lacerations to the head.
