CORAL SPRINGS -- A 3-year-old girl narrowly escaped critical injury on Thursday when she fell out of a moving vehicle and was runover in the 4100 block of Northwest 114th Avenue, police said.

A tire on the car ran over her thigh around 10 a.m. after she tumbled into the street, but no bones were b
roken and she was not seriously hurt, said Police Capt. Rich Nicorvo.

The toddler, who was not strapped into a child restraint seat, had unlocked a backseat car door and toppled out as her mother made a turn, Nicorvo said.

The child was flown via helicopter to Broward General Medical Center but is expected to be fine, Nicorvo said.

Chakisha Hamilton, 29, the child's mother, was cited for failing to use a child restraint seat, he said.

The child's mother had just pulled out of her own driveway, driven down a residential street and was making a turn when the child opened the door and fell out, Nicorvo said.

Police didn't know how fast she was traveling at the time, but said it couldn't have been very fast.

"Children are resilient," Nicorvo said. "But I'm sure she's very bruised up."
