A DeKalb man avoided a possible death sentence by pleading guilty Friday to killing two men and cutting off their hands to help him fake their identities and claim life insurance benefits.
Lorenzo Critten, 47, was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 10 years by DeKalb Superior Court Judge Michael Hancock under a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Critten adm
tted killing a man whose body was found May 30, 2001, at the tennis courts at DeKalb Memorial Park, near the Atlanta city limit at Memorial Drive. The victim's hands were never found, and the man has no
t b
en identified. At the time, Critten claimed the man was his brother
and collected $100,000 in life insurance benefits.
The body of the second victim, later identified as John Fitzgerald Horne, was found beside a road in Rockdale County on Oct. 7, 2002. His hands also were missing, and Critten also claimed this man as his brother. But under questioning, he gave conflicting stories and eventually said he was present when the man was killed. He led deputies to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution warehouse in DeKalb County where he once had worked part-time. Horne's hands were found in weeds behind the building.
Critten confessed he killed Horne as the victim sat in a car behind the DeKalb warehouse. He then dumped the body in Rockdale.
