‘Kids Probably Would Have Died’: Woman Alerts Chester Police After Finding Stolen SUV With Boy, Baby Brother Inside
By Joe Holden
November 18, 2019 at 5:56 pm

CHESTER, PA. (CBS) — Two children are safe and sound Monday after a harrowing ordeal in Chester. They were in an SUV that was stolen from a Chinese food restaurant.

Two teens are now facing kidnapping charges.

The look you could see on a 6-year-old child’s face revealed the terrifying moments he endured after police say two 17-year-olds stole his mom’s car. He and a 9-month-old sibling were in the back seat of the SUV.

Police say the mother left the car unattended for a short time while she got takeout.

“At this point, it seemed like a crime of opportunity — they found a running car, jumped in it and tried to take it, perhaps thought better of it when they realized what they had,” Chester Police Chief James Nolan said.

What they had was two innocent children and quickly an army of police tracking their movements.

About 20 minutes into the search, Lonette Jackson got home from work and noticed a car was blocking her in.

“I wrote a note asking them not to park there anymore and set the note on the car. We pulled off and went around the corner to the store,” Jackson said.

Jackson and her sister went to the corner store and saw a lot of police activity.

It was then they realized the car that blocked them in was similar to the one investigators were feverishly searching for.

“She was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s the car.’ So I jumped out the car and ran around the corner to the cops,” Jackson said.

Jackson was relieved but frustrated she didn’t initially investigate the car further.

“I’m a mom. I’m a little upset with myself because I felt like I put the note on the car and walked away, never even thought to look in the car,” she said. “Had I not gone back outside, those kids probably would have died out there last night. It was freezing.”

Police tracked down the 17-year-old thieves. For a time, people in this neighborhood had feared the worst.

“They got the two teens, right? So, there, they’ll learn — they’ll learn their fate, it’s about to come on them,” Chester resident Bill Tiller said.

The two suspects  are facing kidnapping conspiracy charges in the juvenile court system.

The mother of the children is not facing any charges.

Police: 35-Year-Old Man Fighting For Life After Being Shot In Drive-By Double Shooting In Chester
By CBS3 Staff
February 9, 2020 at 10:30 pm

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) — Police say a 35-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot in the head in a drive-by double shooting at a red light in Chester. The incident happened shortly around 1:40 p.m. Sunday in the area of West 9th and Edwards Streets.

City of Chester police say officers found a silver Nisan Sentra on the front lawn of a residence on the 1600 block of West 9th Street with its window shot out and Farad Ishmail inside with a gunshot wound to his head.

Ishmail was rushed to Crozer Chester Medical Center and placed in critical condition, according to police.

A second victim, identified by authorities as 40-year-old Lawann Smith, was found nearby in a car stopped at a red light in the area of West 9th and Flower Streets. Smith was inside a vehicle with three other men and was suffering from a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

Smith was taken to the hospital and placed in stable condition.

It’s unclear at this time if Ishmail or Smith was the intended target or what the motive behind the shooting is.

The descriptions of the gunshots were all too familiar.

“Pop, pop, pop, pop. The dude in the back was firing at the dude in the front,” a witness said.

The man happened to be waiting for the light to turn green when gunfire erupted.

“I’m fine. Two of my passengers are fine. One guy took a bullet in the bicep. Came through the back of the car. He’ll be fine,” he said. “From what police said, it was simply not a little 9 mm or a little 22mm, they were using an AR-15. I have two or three rounds in the car.”

The lingering effects of being caught up in a shooting? Frustration doesn’t even describe it.

“I’m absolutely disgusted. This is senseless,” he said.

A third vehicle stopped at a red light was found to be struck by gunfire, but the occupant was not injured.

No arrests have been made as the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police at 610-447-8431.

Police: Multiple Suspects Abduct Man In Chester, Sparking Wild Crime Spree In Delaware County
By Kimberly Davis
February 19, 2020 at 9:55 pm

UPPER CHICHESTER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — A manhunt is on for suspects in a wild home invasion in Delaware County. Investigators say the violence started with an abduction in Chester.

The victim fought back against the home invaders in Upper Chichester.

Police say the home invasion all started as an abduction.

After abducting a man in a Chester home, the suspects allegedly came back to the victim’s family’s home to rob his family.

It was a frightening scene in the Boothwyn section of Delaware County as residents watched a man get shot at just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

“I got up, looked out the window and I seen guys running down the middle of the street, with a guy shooting behind him as he’s running one way, shooting the other,” witness Steven King said.

According to Upper Chichester Police, the victim told detectives he was abducted and his truck was stolen from a home on the 500 block of Kerling Street in Chester.

Police say the abductors drove the victim to his family’s home on the 1600 block of Graham Avenue in Boothwyn, where the two men demanded money from the victim and two other victims inside the home.

After ransacking the house, and pistol-whipping the victim, the men left empty-handed.

That’s when police say the victim followed the suspects, who opened fire on the victim.

A neighbor says he saw the suspects get picked up by another vehicle.

“They were running up this way. The car comes down from this way, met him at that corner and then went up the road that way,” the neighbor said.

The victim’s truck was struck by several bullets on the passenger’s side door.

Upper Chichester police say they’re looking for two or three men.

King says he saw the vehicle the men took off in.

“A white SUV. A big one like a Cadillac/Lincoln-type size,” he said.

As police continue to investigate, neighbors are staying vigilant.

“Making sure the doors are locked,” a neighbor said.

If you have any information about the incident, Upper Chichester police are asking you to give them a call.

“My girlfriend called and said that our children had been shot, so I just got down the street,” Tayvonne’s mother, Jenice Bailey, said.

Tayvonne’s mom said the horror of the moment became all too real as she waited for information.

“It’s the worst day, standing there waiting for confirmation if it’s your kid or not. It’s a terrible feeling,” Bailey said.

Two other teens were also shot in a case that police and Delaware County prosecutors have yet to take questions on.

Police swarmed the area of 200 Broomall Street in a crime scene that quickly expanded for blocks.

Edward’s grandmother was proud of the young man he had become.

“He made a difference here in the community, they loved Edward,” Lisa Brooks said. “He played ball, they came to the games. He stood out as a fun kid, he wasn’t street, he was just about sports, school, girls. He was a lady’s man.”

Edward played varsity basketball for Chester High School. Tayvonne was on the junior varsity team. Both are expected to be honored and remembered Wednesday night when Chester faces Cardinal O’Hara.

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) — Eight people were shot across the city of Chester on Monday — a violent day recorded in a city that needs help. That troubling statistic was met with a major development in a tragic homicide.

A month after they buried their 13-year-old son, the Davis family got news Tuesday from U.S. Marshals and police that four people are now held on first-degree murder in their son’s killing.

Police have charged 23-year-old Tavon Starkey, 23-year-old Keyonte Watkins, 30-year-old Danielle Showell and 22-year-old Sulayman Womack with first-degree murder and related offenses.

“It’s so bitter for me, man, not just because he’s my son, he was one of these people that’s once-in-a-generational kids. . He wasn’t selfish about himself because of his athletic ability he had,” father Kyle Davis said.

Ny’Ques Davis had an infectious smile. The Chester eighth-grader was a natural talent on the basketball court and football field.

He was shot numerous times on May 3 behind Saint Katharine Drexel Church.

“He was targeted, he was chased down and he was executed in the middle of the day,” Deputy District Attorney Matthew Krouse said.

His heartbroken parents have continued to celebrate his life. His graduation banner hangs proudly outside the family’s twin home.

Friends keep vigil at his nearby grave where lights, flowers and balloons have been placed.

Neighbors were visibly relieved with word arrests had been made.

“Good, they finally caught them [expletives],” one man said.

Court documents show the four suspected killers confronted Ny’Ques.

Their movements in a silver Acura SUV with Delaware tags were allegedly tracked by surveillance.

Prosecutors wouldn’t single out who pulled the trigger or disclose why they believe Ny’Ques was targeted.

As many as three witnesses placed the four suspects at the scene.

“The last words she heard him say was, ‘Why?’ and I can’t get that out of my head,” grandmother Rosalyn Davis said.

All four suspects are being held without bond at the jail in Delaware County.
