Muslim Cleric Fights Deportation From Australia

23 November 2004

A Muslim cleric fighting an attempt by the Australian government to deport him has vowed to take his case to the High Court in Australia if he loses in the Federal Court.

Sheikh Mansour Leghaei has been classified as a risk to national security by the Australian spy agency, ASIO.

His classification came after he returned from a visit to Iraq with a book that officials say was called 'Jihad and Islam' but Sheik Leghaei says that title was wrongly translated.

The Iranian-born Sheik Leghaei has been in Australia for 10 years and says he poses no threat to the community.

Sheik Leghaei describes himself as a man of God and says he cannot understand the way he has been treated.

The Feder
al Court case has been adjourned.
