Toms River police arrested an 18-year-old suspect on a multitude of charges after he allegedly fired a gunshot into a resident’s home, with the bullet becoming lodged into a patio door.
According to Lt. Gene Bachonski, police were called to Oxford Street on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at approximately 10:47 a.m. The call came in reference to a “verbal dispute involving a handgun,” with the shots fired determined to have occurred after officers investigated.

The victim told police that a male came to his residence and brandished a handgun after banging on the front door. The male then went around to the back door and the victim heard a loud bang, ran upstairs, and called police. Arriving officers located what appeared to be a bullet hole in the rear storm door of the residence. Further investigation revealed that a bullet had penetrated the storm door, entered, and lodged into a downstairs door of the residence and the shell casing was located on the back patio.

According to Bachonski, the victim told officers he was familiar with the man, who was identified as Asheer Johnson, 18, of Toms River. Meanwhile, another resident on Irving Place contacted police and reported he was threatened with a handgun by a man fitting the same description.

Officers went to Johnson’s residence where he was located and arrested without incident. An unregistered firearm was recovered and seized.

Johnson is currently being held on the following charges: attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, aggravated assault and possession of hollow point bullets. He was being held at the Ocean County Jail with no bail.
