Body of Bethalto woma
n found behind store in Belleville
The body of a Bethalto, Ill., woman last seen at a bar near Busch Stadium in St. Louis last week has been found by two landscapers behind a shopping center in Belleville at Highway 157 and Main St.
Paula J. Weinmann's* body was found Wednesday by landscapers who were cutting weeds behind a Rent-A-Center store, authorities said.
Belleville Police Chief Terry Delaney said there were no signs of obvious trauma, but Weinmann's body was decomposed.
Police could not provide further information Thursday, and the St. Clair County coroner's office said autopsy results would not be availab
le for s
everal weeks.
Police and family members said Weinmann, 36, attended a St. Louis Cardinals game Friday and was last seen at Paddy O's bar near Busch Stadium early Saturday morning.
Weinmann's sister Angie Gresham* said she did not know what time Weinmann left the bar and whom she left with.
Delaney said it
appeared Weinmann might have died elsewhere and that her body was later dumped behind the store. Weinmann's car was found in north St. Louis,** and the vehicle's registration papers were found along an exit ramp in East St. Louis.***
"We had all held on to the hope that she ran off, which we knew was probably next to impossible, because she never did anything like that, " Gresham said. "Now, we are just hoping that it wasn't something that she suffered a lot from."
Weinmann is survived by two sons, ages
14 and 16. S
he had worked for a law firm in St. Charles, Mo., for about a year, Gresham said.
She also was an avid fan of the Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues hockey team. Last year, she was awarded the Seventh Man award, which the Blues give to the team's most dedicated fan.
The Blues issued a written statement Wednesday in response to the discovery of Weinmann's body.
"As the recipient of the Blues 2004 Seventh Man Award, she
epitomized the dedicated enthusiasm and love for Blues hockey that our fans have so ably built over time," Blues president and chief executive Mark Sauer said.
