Tampa man found guilty in death of son
A jury has convicted Ronnie Paris Sr. of killing his son, 3-year-old Ronnie Paris Jr.
Paris was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse on Thursday.
Ronnie Paris Jr. had lived with a foster parent much of his life, but within a month after the state returned him to his natural parents, he was hospitalized in a coma, where he died.
At the time of his death, he had scars, scabs and abrasions on his head, arms and legs.
During testimony at the trial, a family friend, Pam Reynolds, testified that the boy's mother told her Ronnie Paris Sr. caused some
of those injuries.
"She said she had gotten out of the shower and heard a noise," Reynolds said. "She sa
id she saw Ronnie throwing the baby to the ground. 'Body slamming the baby' is the term she used."
Family members and members of the jury declined to comment following the verdict.
Prosecutor Jalal Harb says there are only losers in a case like this.
"These are sad cases," Harb said. "Here we are talking about a 37-month-old child. What happened to him, there's absolutely no explanation or excuse for it. You can't help but feel like 'How can we stop this?' And can we stop it? Obviously it's a battle we're not winning. I don't know. Maybe we need to educate our parents a bit more."
Sentencing is set for Aug. 19. Paris could face life in prison.
Paris wife, Nysheera Paris, faces a charge of child neglect. She&
#39;s scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday.
