(WXYZ) - In this week's Detroit's Most Wanted, police are searching for a man identified in at least two armed bank robberies in metro Detroit. They believe he may have hit up even more.

Ivan Austin has been at the top of the U.S. Marshals' most wanted list for a few weeks now after police identified him robbing banks in Grosse Pointe and Roseville in broad daylight.

At just 20 years old, he has a lengthy and violent criminal history.

Austin allegedly wrote, "You have two minutes to stay calm and follow directions and you will live," on a piece of paper.

"He's on a mission and he's on a violent mission," Grosse Pointe Woods Det. Ryan Schroerlucke said.

The first robbery happened on July 30 at the Citizens Bank in Grosse Pointe Woods.

"So he gave her the note at the desk and she’s walking over at this point thinking that he’s armed and there are two people outside that are armed," Schroerlucke said.

"This guy has multiple felony warrants, he’s an extremely violent guy, he’s threatened to kill people. This guy is priority number one – we know he’s going to strike again it’s just a matter of which time and which place," U.S. Marshals Deputy Aaron Garcia said.

Austin is also wanted for a series of smash-and-grabs in Detroit, as well as probation violations. Police believe he cut his tether and is homeless, couch surfing.

He's a black male, 6-feet-1, 170 pounds and considered armed and dangerous. As always, there is a reward for any info leading to his arrest. You can call the Marshals at 313-234-5656.

Infamous ‘Broadway Bandit’ has struck again: FBI
By Craig McCarthy

broadway-bandit.jpg

The “Broadway Bandit” just got out of the slammer less than two weeks ago but he’s back at it again, according to federal authorities.

The brazen 49-year-old bank robber, Jamie Frierson, held up two banks last week in the Bronx by handing the teller that demanded money and said he was armed, the FBI New York Violent Crimes Task Force said Saturday.

The FBI said Frierson robbed two Apple Banks — one at 120 East Fordham Road on Wednesday and another at 44 East 161st Street on Thursday.

Frierson was busted by the feds almost two years ago after seven bank heists over a two-week span, which scored him the nickname “Broadway Bandit.”

The FBI said Frierson was just recently released from prison after being sentenced for his 2017 spree.

He was released on May 3 after being sentenced to time served and ordered to repay nearly $13,000, according to court documents. When Frierson was convicted last August, after a three-day trial, he faced up to 20 years in prison.

It was curtains for the ex-con known as the “Broadway bandit” on Tuesday, according to the NYPD, which said authorities arrested the man wanted by local and federal authorities for robbing two Bronx banks

“APPREHENDED – Fugitive Enforcement Division investigators working with their partners in NYS Parole apprehended Jamie Frierson this morning in the #Bronx. Frierson was wanted for 2 Bank Robberies that occurred this month in the Bronx. @SDNYnews @NYPDTips,” Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea tweeted around 8 a.m.

Frierson, who was recently released from the slammer for robbing seven banks along the Great White Way in 2017, was wanted for hitting two different Apple Banks in the Bronx on May 8 and May 9, according to the FBI.

The 49-year-old was taken into custody by the NYPD and New York State Parole Office after authorities received a tip that he was at an apartment in the Bronx, police sources said. Charges against him were not immediately specified.

Frierson was convicted in August and faced up to 20 years behind bars on five separate counts, but a Manhattan federal judge sentenced him to time served after he told her he was suffering from stage 4 colon cancer, according to court documents.

‘Broadway Bandit’ got wrist-slap sentence due to cancer diagnosis
By Max Jaeger
May 13, 2019 | 9:54pm

The bank robber known as the “Broadway Bandit” — who allegedly returned to his life of crime last week, days after getting out of the slammer with a wrist-slap sentence — may have had nothing to lose.

Jamie Frierson had been facing decades behind bars for his 2017 stickup spree around the Great White Way — but Manhattan federal Judge Analisa Torres sentenced him to time served after he gave her a sob story about his Stage 4 colon cancer, court documents show.

“I am on borrowed time — when you are at the end of your life, certain things become important to you that weren’t important to you before, like your family,” he pleaded, according to court records.

The 49-year-old faced up to 20 years each on five charges when he was convicted in August, but his defense team requested that he simply receive the 20 months he’d already spent in jail awaiting trial because of his cancer diagnosis.

Prosecutors, who were requesting between 210 and 262 months in prison, balked at the request, noting that Frierson could receive treatment while behind bars and was a risk of striking again — even with cancer.

“Sadly, given the defendant’s past history and his disregard for his own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others, the Government is concerned that release, even in his current state, could lead to further criminal activity,” they said.

But Torres agreed to let Frierson walk — citing his late-stage cancer, the hardship of undergoing chemotherapy while locked up and his general good behavior on the inside.

“The sentence I will impose today will credit Mr. Frierson for his good qualities,” Torres ruled at Frierson’s April 29 sentencing hearing, referring to his behavior while in jail.

“It also reflects that Mr. Frierson is in an extremely weakened state and does not present a threat to public safety. Finally, it considers that the length of Mr. Frierson’s incarceration thus far is not indicative of its deterrent value because it has been extremely harsh due to his medical condition.”

But the FBI says he wasted no time trying to knock over more banks — allegedly holding up Apple Banks on East Fordham Road and East 161st Street in the Bronx last week, each time waltzing in and handing a teller a note saying he was armed and looking for cash.

Neither Torres nor Frierson’s defense attorney responded to requests for comment.

Cancer-stricken ‘Broadway bandit’ looks frail in court
By Andrew Denney
May 17, 2019 | 4:08pm

The cancer-stricken “Broadway Bandit” looked frail as he appeared in Manhattan federal court Friday for a hearing related to yet another bank-robbery charge.

“Yes, your honor,” Jamie Frierson, 49, replied in a soft voice when Magistrate Judge Stewart Aaron asked the convicted bank robber if he understood his rights.

Frierson, wearing a neon-green t-shirt and dark pants, could hardly walk out of the courtroom after the hearing and leaned heavily on a cane for support — a sharp contrast from the tough-guy pose he cut during his string of robberies along the Great White Way.

“I HAVE A GUN. GIVE ME MONEY,” he wrote in a note to one terrified bank teller working at an HSBC Bank branch on Union Square in August 2017 — his first caper in a string of seven bank robberies along Broadway.

Frierson was arrested later that month and sat in jail while awaiting trial. At his sentencing on April 29, District Judge Annalisa Torres, citing Frierson’s Stage 4 colon-cancer diagnosis, let the sickly stick-up artist walk with time served.

In the days to follow, Frierson allegedly held up two Apple Bank branches in The Bronx. He was arrested May 14 and has since been kept in a hospital.

At his presentment on one of the latest charges, Frierson was appointed a public defender, Christopher Flood of the Federal Defenders of New York, who declined to comment following the hearing.
