Suspected robber's arrest shocks, relieves Raleigh residents by Sloane Heffernan

Raleigh, N.C. — The arrest of a Raleigh man suspected in eight robberies and attempted robberies throughout Wake County has left neighbors and family members in disbelief and some in the community relieved.

Walter Kevin Johnson, 28, faces nearly two dozen charges – including nine counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count each of first-degree burglary, attempted robbery and extortion – after Raleigh police and Wake County sheriff's investigators say he robbed or tried to rob several people at or near their homes during a two-week crime spree last month and earlier this month.

Johnson, of 6124 Braidwood Court, was arrested Friday during a traffic stop and was in the Wake County Detention Center Saturday under a secured bond of $3.9 million.

Investigators said they do not believe he acted alone in the crimes, and they expect additional arrests in the case.

Johnson's wife said Sunday that they were having financial problems and admitted the evidence against her husband was strong. She declined to comment further, however. :p

Neighbors said Saturday that they were shocked by Johnson's arrest.

"I think it is unbelievable that someone could be living this close and you have no idea," said Diane Lewis, who lives on Braidwood Court, off Glenwood Avenue in northwest Raleigh. "It's nerve-wracking."

Police say several of the crimes happened near Johnson's home, including one less than 2 miles away on Pleasant Valley Road on Sept. 22. (Get details of the crimes in the map below.)

In that case, investigators say, a man armed with a handgun assaulted another man and stole a woman's purse as they walked from their car.

Less than 24 hours later, a woman parking her car at an apartment complex off Duraleigh Road – about 3 miles from Johnson's home – was forced into her car and made to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash. She was dropped off, and her car was later found abandoned near her home.

In one of the latest cases, a woman who lives in a neighborhood near Penny and Holly Spring roads near Cary reported waking up in the middle of the night to an armed man in her bedroom.

She said the man told her he'd been in her house for several hours stealing her belongings, made her write down her family's banking information and then demanded she drop off $45,000 for him the following day.

Winnie Kasper said Saturday she is relieved that authorities have made an arrest. Kasper changed her walking routine after one of the robberies happened on her block.

"I am very thankful that they got him," she said.

According to the North Carolina Secretary of State's website, Johnson owns a web design and marketing company called 1855 Media LLC. The firm's website features of photo of Johnson receiving an award from former Gov. Mike Easley.

Johnson has a lengthy criminal history, including prior robbery charges in Vance and Orange counties.

In July 2002, he was convicted of larceny in Vance County and was sentenced to 6 to 8 months in prison.

In Orange County in October 2002, Johnson was convicted of several counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon from crimes spanning a six-month period in 2001 and was sentenced to 5-6 years in prison, followed by parole, which ended in April 2012.

Details emerge about alleged serial robber's past by Sloane Heffernan & Amanda Lamb

Raleigh, N.C. — A Raleigh man facing two dozen charges stemming from a series of recent armed robberies that put communities across Wake County on edge once worked for the governor's western residence while on a prison work-release program in 2007 and 2008.

Keith Acree, a spokesman for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, said Monday that Walter Kevin Johnson worked in landscaping on the property of the North Carolina Governor's Mansion in Asheville while he was serving nine years in prison for armed robbery charges at Buncombe Correctional Center.

Raleigh police and Wake County sheriff's investigators say Johnson, 28, of 6124 Braidwood Court, is suspected in eight armed robberies or attempted robberies from Sept. 22 to Oct. 8 in Raleigh, Cary, Holly Springs and Wake Forest in which the victims were robbed at or near their homes.

In several of the cases, Johnson allegedly approached the victims and used a handgun to rob them of money and personal belongings. Authorities say he also forced some of them to drive to ATMs to withdraw cash. In one case, he's accused of threatening to harm a Cary woman's children if she did not leave him $45,000 in cash at a drop-off point.

Johnson was arrested Friday and jailed under a $3.925 million bond – an amount that a District Court judge refused to lower during Johnson's first court appearance Monday afternoon.

Matt Faucette, an attorney for Johnson, said his client waits tables at Washington Duke Inn in Durham and also runs a Web design and development firm, 1855 Media LLC in Raleigh.

The company website, which claims to be a leader in the field of Web development marketing, features a photo that purports to be Johnson receiving an outstanding achievement award on behalf of 1855 Media from former Gov. Mike Easley, Easley's wife and their son.

Easley said Monday that neither he nor former first lady Mary Easley remembers taking the photo and that he can't recall there ever having been an occasion for the photo opportunity.

The governor's office also could not find a record of the award, but said the document in the photo appears to be a certificate of appreciation, a document usually mailed to inmates on work-release programs. :rotfl:

The North Carolina Secretary of State's website lists 1855 Media as having been formed June 12, 2013.

Easley was governor from 2001 to 2009.

Johnson was convicted in July 2002 of multiple charges of armed robbery, and spent nine years in prison until he was released in August 2011.

Law enforcement investigators haven't commented on a motive for the alleged crimes, but Johnson's wife said Saturday that the family was struggling financially. How about... the nigger loved armed robbery?

Faucette said clients of Johnson's Web design firm were not paying for services they received.

"He's got a young wife and a 6-week-old little boy," Faucette said. "Definitely, it's a difficult situation for his family."

One local client told WRAL News Monday that the company is not what it appears to be and that a comment claiming to be from the client on the firm’s website praising Johnson's services was false. No Shiite.

The client said it fired Johnson after he sold the company a logo that later was discovered to be used by another local company. That's my nigger!

Alleged serial robber faces new charges by Amanda Lamb

Raleigh, N.C. — A Raleigh man charged in a series of armed robberies in Wake County was facing more charges Wednesday for allegedly attacking a woman and for robbing a jewelry store.

Walter Kevin Johnson, 28, of 6124 Braidwood Court, faces two dozen charges in connection with the crimes, which happened between Sept. 22 and Oct. 8 in Raleigh, Cary, Holly Springs and Wake Forest.

He was jailed Tuesday at the Wake County Detention Center under a $3.925 million bond.

On Wednesday, he received three additional charges of assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun and obtaining property by false pretense.

Police say Johnson attacked a young woman in the driveway of a north Raleigh home on Wynneford Way on Sept. 27.

The woman, who was dog-sitting, told investigators that a man came up behind her, wrapped his arm around her neck, put a gun to her head and tried to force her to drive to an ATM. When she refused, he pushed her to the ground and kicked her, police said.

The young woman's family declined to comment Wednesday.

Earlier this month, police say, Johnson robbed Bardy's Estate Jewelry & Diamonds. Investigators haven't commented on a possible motive for the crimes but said they are continuing to investigate.

"(We're) making sure that any other stones – not just stones but pebbles, at this point – are overturned as well," Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said Tuesday. "We're looking to follow up on any great or small lead to see if there could be any accomplices, to determine what the motive is and the list just goes on. The investigation is not over simply because an arrest has been made."

Police arrested Johnson on Friday afternoon after his wife called 911 and said she suspected him of the crimes.

"There's evidence all over the house," the woman said in the call. "I just can't find the damn gun."

"I'm kind of terrified, because I have a newborn in the house," she added. "He's been acting really weird, and I don't know if he even has a job anymore."

The caller in the 911 recording was not revealed during the call, and Raleigh police would neither identify the caller nor confirm if it was Johnson's wife.

A call-for-service record requested by WRAL News, however, shows the 911 call was made from Johnson's home, and his attorney, Matt Faucette, said Johnson lived with his wife and their 6-week-old son.

In talking about his client Monday, Faucette said that Johnson ran a Web design firm and had not been paid for his services. In an interview with WRAL News on Saturday, Johnson's wife said the family was having financial problems.

Police say several of the crimes happened near Johnson's home, including one less than 2 miles away on Pleasant Valley Road on Sept. 22.

In that case, investigators say, a man armed with a handgun assaulted another man and stole a woman's purse as they walked from their car.

Less than 24 hours later, a woman parking her car at an apartment complex off Duraleigh Road – about 3 miles from Johnson's home – was forced into her car and told to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash. She was dropped off, and her car was later found abandoned near her home.

In one of the latest cases, a Cary woman said she awoke in the middle of the night to an armed man in her bedroom who made her write down her family's banking information and then told her that he would hurt her children if she did not drop off $45,000 for him the following day.

Terence Dante Legare

Mableton man gets 14 years for aggravated assault by Rodney Harris

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A Mableton man has been convicted of aggravated assault with intent to rob, according to the Cobb County District Attorney's office.

Terence Dante Legare, 44, was charged with assault against a store clerk after a September 2012 attack at a CVS store in Mableton.

According to the D.A., Legare claimed he went to the store to buy gum or candy and realized he didn't have the money to pay for it. He says that after asking the clerk if he could come back and pay, she refused and he left.

The clerk provided a different account saying Legare implied he had a weapon, and threatened to "blow her head off," according to the release. Nigga gonna blow somebody's head off over candy and gum, knowha'm'say'n.

The report says that surveillance video also showed the clerk backing away from the register with her hands up after Legare approached the counter.

Senior Judge Frank Mills, of Cherokee County, sentenced Legare to 20 years, with 14 years to serve.

The D.A's office says Legare has previously served time for drug and other offenses.

Kenneth Bevel

Police: Armed robber brings child to shooting

CHAMBLEE, Ga. — Police said a man brought a child to an armed robbery, where he shot the victim several times after using Craigslist to schedule the meet-up. That was might white of that nigger to give the niglet some on the job training, knowha'm'say'n. How else are they going to learn how to be a nigger and keep it real.

Investigators have been able to identify the suspect because he is still posting on the website.

Chamblee police said they found an ad for furniture using the same phone number. They're calling the man very dangerous; not only did he bring along a 7-year-old child to the robbery and shooting, police said he meant to kill two people that night. Damn good teacher, that nigger!

"I was so scared because I was bleeding so badly. I was shocked, scared -- shocked, don't know how I'm going to survive," said shooting victim Shihan Kamal.

Kamal survived being shot three times at point-blank range by the bullet of a 40 caliber gun. :(

"He started to bang on the door to find out if my roommate was there," Kamal said.

But the roommate barricaded herself in her room, holding the door knob tightly. Chamblee Police Sgt. Ernesto Ford said 27-year-old Kenneth Bevel is the man who caused such terror that night inside the Gentry's Walk apartment. Kamal said he contacted Bevel from a Craigslist ad because he needed his cable box fixed. Bevel showed up with his apparent family.

"Could you imagine someone with wife and kids came over here to try and rob you?" Ford said. "He saw a man with what he thought was his wife and child and felt safe."

Police said Bevel has a long criminal history that includes violent tendencies. He's wanted for aggravated assault with the intent to murder, attempted robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. That is some pretty good street cred, knowha'm'say'n.

Police think Bevel is somewhere in the downtown Atlanta area.

Ford said if you're making a transaction where you don't know the person, meet in the parking lot of a police department. It's much safer that way.

If you know where Bevel is, you're asked to call Sgt. Ford at 770-986-5008.

Police: Man commits 18 robberies in 7 days

A Gwinnett County man faces a 57-count indictment for 18 armed robberies in just seven days.

Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh learned that some of those robberies happened within a matter of hours. My nigger was on a roll!

A grand jury indicted 20-year-old Demarcus Morris for an alleged crime spree that unfolded very quickly in the Norcross area. Great street cred, my nigger, it's not every nigger that gets called a one nigger crime spree, knowha'm'say'n.

District attorney Danny Porter said one of the victims ultimately led authorities to Morris.

"We have an armed robbery at 1:30 a.m. We have armed robbery at 3:55 a.m. We have armed robbery at 4:30 a.m, 5:30 a.m.," Porter said.

Porter said Morris confronted his victims in parking lots. He allegedly climbed into some of their cars.

Bobby Swanger had just returned home from an overnight security job. He said he got out of his truck and there was a gun just a few feet from his face.

"He said, 'You know what this is. You know what this is about,'" Swanger said. "The next thing I remember is being shot."

"He was willing to use a deadly weapon. He's willing to escalate the level of force," Porter said.

But Porter said Gwinnett County police moved to make an arrest when a victim recognized Morris.

A Gresham man was arrested Saturday afternoon and charged with armed robbery after police officers identified him as the man accused of robbing a clothing maker he met on Instagram.

Devontae Watkins, 21, of the 1200 block of West 81st Street, allegedly made a plan with a clothing designer from Calumet City to buy some of her products after he saw them posted on Instagram. He contacted the woman through his Instagram account and they agreed to meet on Sept. 11, according to court records.

That day, the woman drove to meet Watkins, who climbed into the car to look at a bag she was carrying full of pants, belts, and baseball caps, among other items, according to court records. Then Watkins brandished a knife with a four-inch blade and demanded the woman give him all of the clothing items while an unknown co-offender walked toward her car holding a gun, according to court records.
