Mom is guilty in girl's death; child ate crack

A Phoenix woman whose children ate crack cocaine while she was sleeping pleaded guilty Friday to manslaughter and child abuse in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Lakesha Wilson, 21, who is seven months pregnant, will be sentenced to supervised probation, according to the terms of her plea agreement. If she had been convicted by a jury, she could have been sentenced to nearly nine years in prison.

Her 1-year-old daughter died and her 3-year-old son was hospitalized in February after they found a plastic bag of crack cocaine while their parents were sleeping.

Earlier this week, Wilson's husband, Deandre Douglas, 26, refused a plea agreement that would have sent him to prison for fiv

e years, even though Commissioner Barbara Hamner informed hi
m that prosecutors intend to present evidence to show that he is a drug dealer.

"This is not a case that jurors are going to like to hear about," Hamner told him. "Everyone has an issue about children when it involves drugs."

He faces nearly 30 years in prison if convicted by a jury.

Early on Feb. 22, Wilson and Douglas brought their children to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

According to court records, 13-month-old Dejah was unresponsive and was pronounced dead; 3-year-old Cameron was found to have a high level of cocaine in his system.

Douglas also tested positive for cocaine; Wilson did not.

And police found the bag of crack in their apartment. Both were charged with reckless manslaughter and child abuse.
