Nine in court for terror trial

February 25, 2008 12:29pm

LEGAL argument has begun in the case of nine men accused of terrorism-related offences in one of the biggest trials in New South Wales history.

The nine men are charged with conspiring to perform acts in preparation for a terrorist attack, including buying chemicals and locating extremist material.

The courtroom, in a new complex at Parramatta in Sydney's west, was so crowded at the start of the trial today that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Whealy allowed lawyers to sit in jury seats.
More than 20 people had to stand in the courtroom as proceedings began under tight security.

The nine accused and corrective services officers sat in the dock, a glassed-off room to the side of the court.

Justice Whealy told the court lawyers would be canvassing nine issues over the following months before the jury was empanelled.

They will include an application for a change of venue.
