Video shows scenes of shooting incidents in Brooklyn and Queens

At least eight people were shot – two of them fatally – in another bloody night across the Big Apple, authorities said Thursday.
Those wounded included three teenagers, including a 17-year-old girl hit in the foot by a stray bullet in Queens, and two boys, 14 and 17, shot in a Brooklyn park by scooter-riding gunmen, according to cops.
One of the fatal victims was a 32-year-old man who was discovered in the backseat of a Honda Civic with gunshot wounds to his neck and chest just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The car was parked on Sutphin Boulevard near 121st Avenue in South Jamaica, Queens, police said. The man, whose name wasn’t released, was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.
A 28-year-old man also showed up at the same hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, and said he was struck while walking near the scene, cops said. He simply reported hearing gunshots and feeling pain, and was listed in stable condition.

The other mortally-wounded victim was blasted in the chest and leg while riding in a Jeep Grand Cherokee passenger with his sister in Brooklyn just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, cops said.
A gunman on a bicycle, possibly a Citi Bike, approached the passenger’s side of the Jeep when it stopped at a red light on Classon Avenue, near Atlantic Avenue in Prospect Heights, and fired into it before taking off, police said.
The victim’s sister tried to drive away but crashed the car into a “stationary object” nearby and fainted behind the wheel, cops said.

The male passenger, 37, was taken to the Kings County Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead. His sister, 31, did not sustain any visible injuries, but was taken to the same hospital for a medical evaluation, cops said.
Police could not immediately confirm whether either of the passengers were intended targets. No arrests have been made.
Later in Brownsville, police said two men on a scooter opened fire on a pair of teen boys in Van Dyke Park on Dumont Avenue near Mother Gaston Boulevard at around 12:20 a.m. on Thursday.

The 17-year-old victim was shot in the back and taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. The 14-year-old was shot in the foot and taken to Maimonides Medical Center. Both were listed in stable condition.
There were two stray-bullet shootings in Queens, the first at around 8 p.m. Wednesday when a 32-year-old woman got caught in the crossfire as two groups of people in vehicles fired at each other.

The victim was struck in the chest as she walked on the sidewalk on 142nd Street near Linden Boulevard in South Jamaica, cops said.
Cops were still on the scene investigating a few hours later, at around 10:20 p.m., when they heard gunshots coming from around the corner at 143rd Street near Linden Boulevard — and found the 17-year-old girl shot in the foot.
She too was walking when she was struck by a stray bullet, cops said.
A man was taken into custody on scene, with charges pending. He is also believed to be connected to the previous shooting, authorities said.
Meanwhile, a man who was arrested after a fight with his girlfriend in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, at around 1 a.m. Thursday told hospital workers that he had been shot earlier in the night.
Cory Littles, 34, was being treated at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn for scrapes and cuts on his chest and forearm when he informed hospital staff that his girlfriend’s mother fired at him with a shotgun earlier in the night, cops said.

Back at the scene, on 86th Street near Gelston Avenue, a 43-year-old woman was taken into custody and a shotgun was recovered, according to police sources.

NYC crime jumped 31% last month compared to June 2021: police

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the department was arresting the same people for crimes “over and over again”

Crime in the Big Apple skyrocketed by more than 30% in June compared to the same month last year with NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell pointing the finger, in part, at repeat offenders.
A rise in six of the seven major crimes measured by the department contributed to the increase — though the seventh category, murders, dropped a noticeable 31.6% last month in comparison to numbers compiled in June 2021, according to the NYPD’s preliminary statistics.
Grand larceny spiked 41%, robbery rose 36.1% and burglary went up 33.8%.
The crime index rose 31.1% overall from June 2021.
Last month 26 murders were committed while a year ago 38 murders were cited, the NYPD said. Shootings incidents are also down by 24.2% from year to year in June.

The silver lining comes despite a number of high profile homicides last month, including a young mother who was shot dead on the Upper East Side, a Queens man who was gunned down while sitting in his car and a Harlem hoops star who was killed in a shooting.

When addressing the spike in most crimes, Sewell said during a Thursday press conference the department was arresting the same people for crimes “over and over again.”

KEECHANT SEWELL Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell spoke about the latest crime statistics for New York City on July 7. Michael Brochstein/ZUMAPRESS.com
“We have to look at recidivists in a number of these offenses that keep getting out and committing the same crimes over and over again,” she said. “So while we are seeing some declines in homicides and shootings, we’re still focused on the felony assaults, the burglaries and the other offenses as well.

“But we are arresting the same people over and over again and we’re not gonna stop trying to make sure we put them in custody and making sure that they face the consequences for those actions.”

Sewell added while some criminal justice reforms were well-meaning, she wants more changes made following recent tweaks.

Sewell did tout the job the department is doing to bring down gun violence.

Police said they’ve seized more than 3,700 guns year-date in 2022 with gun arrests at a 27-year high.

What do you think? Post a comment.

There were 355 gun arrests in June 2022 to bring the total number for the six months of the year citywide to 2,381 – a 4% increase from 2,290 gun arrests in the first half of 2021.

Police investigate the scene where a man was shot in the neck and the back on July 6. Police investigate the scene where a man was shot in the neck and the back on July 6. Gregory P. Mango
“The NYPD’s work to drive down gun violence in New York City is taking hold – with the number of shootings decreasing across all five boroughs,” Sewell said in a statement.

“We have taken thousands of guns off the streets – both traditional firearms and ghost guns – and made significant illegal-weapon interdictions along with our law enforcement partners.

“We are encouraged by this downward trend in gun violence as summer gets underway, but realize that we must remain focused on our critical public-safety mission – the lives of New Yorkers depend on it.”

Bodega owner stabs attacker to death

Robberies at Big Apple bodegas have nearly tripled so far this year new NYPD statistics show — leading the head of a convenience store group to call on DAs to do more to fight crime.
A whopping 195 thefts have been reported from bodegas in the Big Apple so far in 2022, police said Friday.
At this point in 2021, only 75 such stick-ups had been reported.
“You cannot stop them because the DA is not prosecuting them,” said Francisco Marte of the Bodega and Small Business Group, who spoke outside Manhattan’s Blue Moon Convenience store, where a worker recently stabbed an assailant to death during an attack and was then arrested himself.
“You see people getting busted 50 times and they come out without paying not even one dollar bail and they go right back and steal from the stores again.”
1_th.jpg

00:00 01:27
Heists from the city’s commercial establishments, in general, have also more than doubled from 2021 to 2022, year-to-date, data shows.

A total of 730 heists have been reported from businesses across the city so far this year, compared to 350 at that point in 2021, according to the NYPD.

Data shows heists from the city's commercial establishments, in general, have also more than doubled from 2021 to 2022.Data shows heists from the city’s commercial establishments, in general, have also more than doubled from 2021 to 2022.Stephen Yang
Frank Garcia, chairman of the National Association of state Chambers of Commerce, said he was not surprised by the dramatic spike in robberies at bodegas.

“The numbers are even higher. The numbers are underreported,” Garcia said.

He said some bodega owners are not enough reporting all robberies because they have lost confidence in the police and the criminal justice system.

Garcia said the arrest of bodega owner of Jose Alba who stabbed an assailant to death while defending himself has sent a bad message to Latino merchants.

“A lot of members don’t see the police as their friend,” he said.

A total of 730 heists have been reported from businesses across NYC so far this year.A total of 730 heists have been reported from businesses across NYC so far this year.Stephen Yang
The latest figures were revealed days after Manhattan bodega worker Alba, 51, allegedly fatally stabbed a man, Austin Simon, 35, who attacked him over a bag of chips. Alba was charged with the killing, leading to outcry from local leaders who feel he was just a worker trying to defend himself during a crime wave.

Marte also decried what clerks are facing.

“We have been having that problem every day. The violence is too much on the bodegas and small grocery stores,” he said.

“It’s very concerning. A lot of bodegas and small store owners they are concerned. We are scared about what’s happening right now. When someone comes in with a mask, you get very anxious about what can happen.”

A rising college basketball star cut down by a stray bullet in Harlem on Father’s Day was collateral damage in a wild shootout that involved 13 guns and scores of shots fired, police said.
Darius Lee, 21, was among nine people shot in Harlem early June 20 at a party hosted by local rapper Troy “Rich” Rhymer, authorities said.

The NYPD revealed this week that Lee was felled during a cascade of gunfire that involved 13 guns and 53 shots.
Investigators determined 10 firearms were used based on casings found at the scene of the shootout. Three more guns were recovered at the scene of the shooting, authorities said.
Two women and seven men, including Lee, were shot near the intersection of East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue around 12:40 a.m., according to the NYPD.

Mayor Adams addresses crime in NYC on July 5

Major crimes in New York City have skyrocketed 37% so far this year — driven by grand larcenies, auto thefts, burglaries and robberies, according to NYPD data.
Grand larceny has shot up 49% so far this year over last year as of Sunday — from 18,058 to 26,908. Auto theft has spiked by 46.2%, from 4,855 to 7,100.
Robbery is up 39.2%, from 6,530 to 9,091, and burglaries increased by 32.9%, from 6,251 to 8,305, the numbers show.
Felonious assault rose by 18.6% and rapes saw an 11% increase so far this year over 2021 .
“This is going to probably be a record year for increasing crime in New York City,” said Joseph Giacalone, a John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor and a former NYPD sergeant.
“You have a short-staffed NYPD and you still have policies that go against police work,” he said.
Giacalone called the huge increase in car thefts “something right out of the 1990s.”

Murders, meanwhile, were down 5.6% so far this year over the same period in 2021, from 252 to 238. The number of people shot fell by 7.3%, from 974 to 903, the data shows.
Giacolone said that grim tally could change in an instant.
“Shootings were up big last week, they took a break this week,” Giacolone said. “That’s good news, but that could all change with one BBQ in Brooklyn.”

“There’s going to be a heat wave,” he said. “The shootings will get worse. We don’t have enough manpower to compete with all the crime that’s going on.”

An innocent 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were among at least nine people struck by bullets in a bloody spate of city violence overnight — with seven of the victims shot in just an hour, cops and police sources said.
The two young victims were walking on Rev. James A. Polite Boulevard near East 163rd Street in the Woodstock neighborhood in the Bronx around 11:30 p.m. when a car drove by and a man inside said something to them, authorities said.
The man then opened fire — striking the 12-year-old girl in the arm and side, and grazing the 16-year-old boy in the chin, cops and the sources said.

The revolving door of justice is spinning in overdrive these days.
Roughly one in every five crooks busted for burglary or theft in New York last year got re-arrested on a felony charge within 60 days after being put back on the streets, NYPD figures obtained by The Post show.
The alarming statistics reveal increases in alleged recidivism as high as three times what they were in 2017 — before New York’s controversial bail-reform law took effect in 2020.
“We went from a revolving-door justice system to an E-ZPass system,” fumed one frustrated Manhattan cop.
The numbers also show that suspects arrested last year for misdemeanor petit larceny amid the city’s ongoing shoplifting spree went on to quickly commit more serious crimes, with 21.6% charged with felonies less than two months later.

That rate is more than 2.5 times the 8.1% recorded in 2017.
Another Manhattan cop predicted, “Nothing will change until the politicians stop worrying about the criminals.”
Instead, the focus should be on the victims of the city’s spiraling crime crisis, the cop said.
“It is traumatic for someone to walk into a house that has been burglarized or walk outside the house and see their car was stolen,” the cop said.
The NYPD’s five-year comparisons show 23.7% of last year’s burglary suspects were re-arrested within 60 days, up from 7.7% in 2017 — an increase of 208%.
The police attack suspect is one of many alleged criminal in New York City to get re-arrested on a felony charge within 60 days of being released without bail. The police attack suspect is one of many alleged criminals in New York City to get re-arrested on a felony charge within 60 days of being released without bail.
For suspects charged with grand larceny, the spike was nearly as high — 203% — with the alleged recidivism rate hitting 19.7%, up from 6.5%.
Among suspected auto thieves, 21% were soon busted again last year, more than twice the 10.3% recorded in 2017.
Meanwhile, the alleged recidivism rates among two categories of offense — burglary and auto theft — were even worse in 2020, when they were 27.1% and 26.8%.
Under New York’s bail reform law, only the most serious burglaries — those in which the perpetrator is armed with a deadly weapon or injuries a victim — are eligible for bail and virtually all larceny suspects get released without having to post bail or bond.
An NYPD detective with more than 20 years on the job said, “They’re letting everybody out.”
“We see it every single day: ROR’d, ROR’d, ROR’d,” the detective said, using slang for “released on recognizance.”
Michelle McKelley has been arrested over 100 times for shoplifting in New York and has repeatedly been released without bail.Michelle McKelley has been arrested over 100 times for shoplifting in New York and has repeatedly been released without bail.Steven Hirsch
“They originally were committing small crimes. Now they realize they can get away with medium crimes and then the bigger crimes they’re still getting away with.”
The veteran investigator also invoked this week’s stick-up of an off-duty cop, who was robbed of his gun and police identification in The Bronx, saying criminals “are just emboldened to do more and more and more.”
“When you get a police officer who’s robbed at gunpoint, where the guy asks him ‘Are you a cop?’ and still robs him – that tells you where this city is right now,” the detective said.
John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor Eugene O’Donnell, a former NYPD cop, said state lawmakers “didn’t level with people when they did bail reform.”
Off-duty NYPD officer being robbedAn off-duty NYPD officer was held up at gunpoint, and his police ID and gun were stolen.
“Bail reform means you can shoot someone on Friday night and be back on the street on Sunday,” he said.
“There used to be a cooling off period where someone was arrested and held. The bad guys are literally beating the arresting officers back to the neighborhood.”
O’Donnell added: “People who are up to no good can’t believe their good fortune.”
“Even if they happen to get caught they have plenty of people advocating for them now,” he said.
“There’s no victim advocate. Everybody has been lined up now on the side of the offender.”
Mayor Eric Adams, a former cop who was elected last year on a law-and-order platform, has been calling for rollbacks to the bail-reform law, most recently to target repeat offenders.
But he’s been stymied in Albany by fellow Democrats in charge of the state Legislature, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-The Bronx) and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers).
Veteran Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said Adams has “got to show movement and he’s got to show power” because every category of major crime is up this year except murder.

“At a certain point, the voters will lose their minds about crime,” Sheinkopf said.
“There was a stabbing on 72nd Street on the No. 2 train in daytime. He’s got to do something or it will take a serious toll on him politically.”

On Wednesday, Adams said he had a “great, great conversation” with Heastie.

Hizzoner said the speaker “agreed to look over some of the data that the New York City Police Department is going to present on how we’re having too many repeated offenders on bail-eligible, non-bail-eligible crime.”

But Heastie’s spokesman later downplayed the discussion, tweeting, “The bulk of the Speaker’s conversation with the Mayor centered around the fact that the crimes he was referring to were bail eligible and detention eligible in family court.”

“The Mayor asked if he could share some data and the Speaker said of course,” spokesman Mike Whyland added.
