Philadelphia Police Highlight Investigations Into 5 Homicides Over Easter Weekend

By Alecia ReidApril 19, 2022 at 5:31 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Authorities provided updates Tuesday on several major investigations in Philadelphia’s gun violence crisis. They are asking for the public’s help to track down suspects in a number of unsolved cases, including the death of a police officer’s son.
Philadelphia is now seven homicides short of this same time last year. Five homicides happened this last Easter weekend.
In a Tuesday afternoon press conference, police highlighted the five homicides from Easter weekend.
On Saturday, April 16, 26-year-old Marquan Kellum was shot in the back and the head and was found with $3,500 in his possession. Police believe he was killed, then dumped on the 5600 block of Newtown Avenue.
The suspect was wearing black clothing and a black mask. One witness says the suspect pointed the gun at him. He also heard three gunshots while he escaped.
“There were post-mortem wounds on the decedent which means the murder more than likely took place prior to this occurrence,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith said.
That same day, in a double shooting, a 17-year-old from Hatfield was killed. Police say it was an exchange of money for ghost guns that went sideways.
Another double shooting on Saturday left a 22-year-old victim with no prior record dead. Police believe the second victim, who survived, was the intended target. The motive is gang-related violence.
On Sunday, a 39-year-old homeless man was shot and killed.
Also on Easter, at 7210 Battersby Street, a 36-year-old police impersonator was shot and killed during an attempted robbery home invasion.
The second suspect ran off. Police recovered a stolen weapon.
“There was a 9mm Smith & Wesson, which was stolen out of Bartow County, Georgia, that was also recovered. Of course, it was preserved for DNA. So if we ever do develop a suspect, enough probable cause, boom, we’ll be able to compare DNA,” Smith said.
In a case from Jan. 24, newly released surveillance footage shows two men accused of shooting and killing 24-year-old Hyram Hill, the son of a Philadelphia police officer, as he exited a store on Broad and Allegheny. They both then fled in a silver Kia Forte that was reported stolen two days prior.
The city has a standing $20,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a person or persons responsible for a homicide in the city. You can call 215-686-TIPS.

By Matt PetrilloMay 16, 2022 at 6:01 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Two pregnant women in Philadelphia have been shot since Friday. As police search for the shooters, people tell Eyewitness News that crime will be top of mind as they vote in Tuesday’s primaries.

“I heard screaming and when I looked out, everybody was running,” a woman said.
A second victim, a 23-year-old man, is also in critical condition after he was shot multiple times. The gunfire alarmed neighbors.
“It was really loud, like, ‘pop, pop, pop,'” neighbor Gregory Gladden said.
The incident is the second shooting involving a pregnant woman in as many days in Philadelphia.
Detectives were called to 46th and Market Streets in West Philly on Friday after a 19-year-old woman who’s two months pregnant was shot as she was riding in an SUV. The woman was in critical condition on Friday, but after surgery, police now say she and her unborn baby are in stable condition.

But Eyewitness News has found that 90 women and girls have been shot the Philadelphia this year to date, which includes victims both injured and killed. That’s the highest number of female gunshot victims in at least the last several years, according to data from police.
Now, ahead of Tuesday’s election, crime remains a significant issue for voters in the city.
“They gotta do something about it,” a woman said.
“It’s a real big issue. I vote every time there’s an election because I realize, hey I ain’t got but one vote and it counts,” Gladden said.
No arrests have been made in either of those shootings involving pregnant women. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives.

Philadelphia Business Owners Seeing Uptick In Brazen Thefts

By Kerri CorradoMay 19, 2022 at 10:11 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – There’s been an uptick in brazen thefts, leaving businesses across the city on edge. It’s forcing some owners to make the decision to close.
The restaurant owner CBS3 spoke with says this isn’t the first time he was burglarized. On top of that, he has dealt with vandalism, trash and surviving COVID as a business owner. He’s doing his best to move forward.
You can hear bottles clinking together. Surveillance video shows burglars ripping through cabinets and swiping alcohol from the shelves of a Chinatown restaurant.
“We had a trash can behind the bar and that was the perfect little basket for them to put al the alcohol that was on the shelves into,” said Kevin Wong, owner of Far East Descendant.
Wong says the men used electrical wires to hoist themselves up the side of the building to the rooftop.
“Scaled over and jumped over and kicked the door in,” Wong said.
Wong says he just opened six months ago. It took him over six years to create and design the restaurant, handmaking everything inside himself. He says seeing this is upsetting.
“As soon as we put it out on social media that we got hit we did get a lot of support from other business owners. They are like ‘hey, it happened to me too,'” Wong said.
Wong isn’t alone. A 7-Eleven was also hit on Wednesday in Glenside.
“The crimes are growing more and more now. Now, they are coming in with big bags and filling up with the merchandise and police cannot do anything to them,” an owner said.
The president of the Delaware Valley Franchise Owners Association says more than a dozen convenience stores have shut down because of crime and shoplifting in the past years and it’s getting worse.
“It’s very hard to run a business these days,” an owner said. “The owners are very scared and the employees are scared. Nobody wants to work in a 7-Eleven.”
Wong is remaining positive and looking on the bright side in the midst of the burglary.
“People should still know that even though there is so much crime in the city, there is a lot is good people here,” Wong said.
Wong upgraded his alarm system right after the burglary.

One resident who didn’t want to show her face tells Eyewitness News the shooting happened as a group of people was sitting on the front porch talking and an argument broke out.
“I don’t really know details, but it just sounds like it was a disagreement and it led to violence,” the resident said.
Chopper 3 shows the police response.

“As the officers arrived on scene, they chased two males who were fleeing. One of the males is believed to have tossed a gun,” Philadelphia Police Captain John Walker said.
Temple University police assisted Philadelphia Police in taking both males in for questioning.
It’s unclear if they’ll be facing charges.
Residents aren’t sure if it’s safe to live there anymore.
“I’m ready to trade this into a new house. I’m going to look for another house. There’s just too much shootings around here,” North Philadelphia resident Doris Bess said.
On Thursday afternoon, CBS3 received a statement from the city saying that an active investigation into the incident continues and that reducing gun violence remains a top priority of the city.

Father, 9-Year-Old Son Among 13 People Killed In Violent Memorial Day Weekend In Philadelphia

By CBS3 StaffMay 30, 2022 at 6:17 p

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It has been a very violent and deadly weekend throughout Philadelphia. Since Friday, there have been 13 homicides and at least 15 shootings.
Detectives at the Philadelphia Police Department headquarters are searching for the person who gunned down a 9-year-old boy and his father. CBS3 talked with a heartbroken woman who lost both her husband and son.
“He was always on YouTube, anime,” Vanessa Frame said.
Nine-year-old Jamel Parks is remembered as outgoing and creative.

He and his father, 38-year-old Gerald Parks, were fatally shot while sitting in their vehicle on Carver Street a few yards from their home.
“I just heard a whole bunch of gunshots and I came outside and just seen him in the car slumped over, unresponsive,” Frame said.
According to the family, the father and son returned from a cookout and had just parked their vehicle when someone opened fire leaving shattered glass on the ground and bullet holes in a nearby rowhome.
Jamel’s mother has one word to describe how she’s feeling.
“Numb, like literally numb. Like, I don’t have any words. I’m just in shock. I can’t believe this is happening right now. I feel like it’s a dream, a nightmare,” Frame said.
A nightmare that several families woke up to this Memorial Day.
Jamel and his father were among six people killed in eight separate shootings in Philly between Saturday night and Sunday.
“As far as the gun violence, it’s ridiculous. I don’t understand why, why people think that that’s the first resort is to go and shoot somebody,” said Dwayne Meeks.
Meeks was scrapping metal around 1 a.m. Monday when he heard shooting on East Tioga in an area where crowds often gather late at night to party and smoke hookah.
He says the shooter’s weapon was distinctive.
“It wasn’t like pow pow. It was like brr pow, brr pow. So it was definitely something big,” he said.
Two women were killed in that shooting. A man and a 14-year-old girl were wounded.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney condemned the recent violence, tweeting: “We must all work together to end this heartbreaking, maddening epidemic and make a safer city for everyone.”
In the city’s Overbrook section, police say a young man, approximately 18 to 21 years old, was shot multiple times and killed on Sunday afternoon.
Police say the shooting happened in a rear alleyway on the 6300 block of West Columbia Avenue around 1:45 p.m. The man was transported to the hospital by police and pronounced dead at 1:58 p.m.

Police say the man was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m. at Temple University Hospital.

By CBS3 StaffJune 5, 2022 at 11:00 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A mass shooting on Philadelphia’s South Street leaves three people dead and 12 others injured. Police say patrol officers in the area heard numerous gunshots coming from the 200 block of South Street just before midnight Saturday.
Multiple shooters reportedly fired into a crowd of people on South Street.

They say one of the officers witnessed the shooting firsthand and quickly fired at one of the shooters, causing them to drop their weapon. Police were able to recover two guns at the scene, one with an extended magazine, but not before 15 people were struck by the gunfire.
“He was within 10 to 15 yards of the shooter watching this person shoot into the crowd when the officer engaged that shooter and as a result of that brave officer, that individual, again we’re uncertain if he was struck or not, but the officer was able to get that individual to drop his gun and flee,” Insp. D F Pace said.

Police described it as a terrifying and chaotic scene.
CBS3 has learned the shooting victims are being treated at various hospitals across the city including, Temple and Jefferson Hospitals and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
Three of the victims, two men and a woman, were pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The extent of the injuries to the other 12 people injured is unclear at this time.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim "Banana Nose" Kenney issued a statement following the mass shooting reading in part:
The events that transpired last evening on South Street are beyond devastating. Once again, we see lives lost and people injured in yet another horrendous, brazen and despicable act of gun violence. Our city and country have experienced a steep rise in gun violence over the past few years. We’ve spent these years grappling with this epidemic—doing everything not only to stop it but to try to understand why the violence continues—it’s senseless, needless and deeply troubling. I know this shooting has shaken our community. The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority. Our administration, in partnership with our local and federal law enforcement agencies, continues to work relentlessly to reduce violence and create safer communities.

The mayor also says his “heart is with the family, friends and loved ones of those lost or injured, and with everyone impacted by this terrible tragedy.”
Police are actively looking for the shooters involved in this incident and are confident that surveillance cameras from around South Street will reveal those responsible for this mass shooting.
The area of 3rd and South Streets remains closed as police investigate.

Second Grade Resident Advisor At Girard College Among 3 Victims Killed In South Street Mass Shooting

By Jasmine PayouteJune 6, 2022 at 5:43 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — We’re learning more about the victims in the mass shooting in Philadelphia on South Street. After the gunshots erupted on South Street, patients piled in to Jefferson Hospital.
“This city is going f—– crazy,” Kenny Green said. “These people shooting like they don’t care.”
Police say 14 people were shot on South Street. Their ages range from 17 to 69 years old. Five of them are under the age of 19.
Green says his 17-year-old daughter is one of them.
“I threw her bloody clothes away. I had to buy her new clothes because the hospital cut her clothes off,” Green said.
“I’m glad it went through her shoulder, it came this close to her face,” he added. “I feel bad for the other people who got shot and killed. I mean, parents got to deal with that.”
Out of the 14 people, three were killed.

The American Federation of Teachers identified one as Kris Minners, a 22 year old second grade advisor at Girard College.
Girard College released a statement after learning about Minners’ passing.

“The Girard College community was shocked and saddened to learn that Kristopher Minners, a current Residential Advisor and former student, was killed in the tragic shooting on South St. in Philadelphia Saturday night. An innocent bystander, Kris had just turned 22 and was celebrating with family and friends. He attended Girard College until 9th grade and since January 2022 has worked in the residential program advising 6th and 2nd grade boys.
Our hearts are broken for Kristopher and his family, and our thoughts are with everyone who was impacted by this appalling act of violence.
Kristopher was so proud to return to Girard and serve as a role model to the young boys in his care, said James D. Turner, Interim President. He was doing an amazing job for us, even being named RA of the month in March. Kris was a vital member of our community, and his loss will be felt deeply.”
Police identified others as 27-year-old Alexis Quinn and 34-year-old Gregory Jackson.
Father Of 17-Year-Old Daughter Wounded In South Street Mass Shooting Sounds Off About Gun Violence In Philly
“When that bullet hit you, it’s a different type of feeling, trust me,” John Johnson said. “All your body, everything, your tendon, lock on you and you can’t control your body.”
Still in his hospital gown, Johnson was one of several victims to walk out of the hospital with bowed heads and heavy hearts.
While many of the victims are expected to be OK, police say one of them, a 23-year-old man, was shot several times in the torso area and is in critical condition.
For victims able to walk away Sunday, they say they’re still healing too.
“I was extremely lucky I just got grrazed,” one shooting victim said. “But I’m still trying to sort it all out.”

South Street Mass Shooting: 1 Man In Custody In Connection To Shooting That Left 3 Dead, 11 Injured, Police Sources Say

By Joe HoldenJune 6, 2022 at 3:02 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — One man is in custody in connection to a mass shooting on Philadelphia’s South Street, police sources tell CBS3. Three people were killed and 11 were struck by gunfire Saturday night. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office is expecting to approve charges for at least two people in connection with what are expected to be nonfatal shootings.
What we know so far about the mass shooting is three people were shot and killed, 11 others were wounded by gunfire and an additional victim was hurt by shattered glass.
Commie joo DA Larry Krasner revised the number of guns fired to at least four. A police officer also fired at one of the shooters who dropped their weapon but ultimately got away.
There is still disbelief about what happened at 11:31 p.m. Saturday.
Prosecutors are linking at least four guns to what police describe as a series of shootings, with multiple shooters, in the 200 and 300 blocks of South Street that sent people running for their lives.
Eyewitness News has obtained new video of homicide unit officials from the DA’s Office surveying the area.
Joanne Pescatore, the chief of the homicide unit, tells CBS3 they’re out there to get a sense of the area where 14 people were shot, including three fatalities.
Video shows much of the evening was chaotic along the 200, 300, and 400 blocks of South Street.
A fight between two armed men outside a water ice store is believed to have been what police call the “genesis” of dozens and dozens of rounds being fired.
Investigators confirm to CBS3 that this fight between three men was the start of trouble.
Police provided the video to CBS3 in an effort to identify the man in the hat. After a brief struggle outside a water ice store, two men, wearing white and black T-shirts, fired at one another. The man in the white T-shirt died.
Now moments after 11:30 p.m., police tell CBS3 that following that shootout, other people pulled out their weapons and started firing.
On Sunday, police said they believed five guns could be traced ballistically to the many shots that were fired. Officers began responding after the first report of shots fired at 11:31 p.m.
Police say as the minutes and seconds unfolded, one officer engaged a shooter who they say was firing into the crowd from a block away. That officer discharged his weapon.
It’s believed that the alleged shooter was struck, perhaps in the hand, but that he could get away.
In a review of the incident for CBS3, retired Deputy Police Commissioner Joe Sullivan downplayed any criticism that officers in the area could have down much to alter Saturday night’s violent outcome.
In the violent aftermath, a total of 14 gunshot victims were scooped by police and raced to three city hospitals, the bulk of them being taken to Jefferson Hospital.
Three were pronounced dead within an hour.
According to police, one victim remains in critical condition, and those remaining in the hospital were expected to survive.
One major question going forward is how police were managing crowds along South street in the moments leading up to the shooting. Their strategy is to keep the crowds flowing.
Video reviewed by CBS3 doesn’t reflect at times that was the case.
There were also other shootings reported nearby — before and after — the South Street shooting.

South Street Mass Shooting: 2 Men In Custody In Connection To Shooting That Left 3 Dead, 11 Injured

By CBS3 StaffJune 7, 2022 at 7:51 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Two men are in custody in connection to a mass shooting on Philadelphia’s South Street over the weekend. Police said Monday night the second suspect, 34-year-old Rashaan Vereen, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals. Vereen is facing attempted murder and aggravated assault charges, among others.
Vereen was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. without incident. Officials also searched his West Passyunk home for weapons but did not find any.
Neighbors say Vereen has two children. It’s unclear if either was home at the time he was taken into custody.

Authorities say Quran Garner has also been charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault, simple assault and violation of uniform firearm acts.
So far, investigators have linked four guns to Saturday night’s violence. One of the weapons was a ghost gun.
Two people were killed along with a gunman in the mass shooting and 11 others were wounded by gunfire and another victim was hurt by shattered glass.

The mass shooting unfolded at 11:31 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators described it as a series of shootings with multiple shooters in the 200 and 300 blocks of South Street that sent people running for their lives.
Video obtained by Eyewitness News shows much of the evening was chaotic along the 200, 300, and 400 blocks of South Street.

A fight between two armed men outside a water ice store is believed to have been what police call the “genesis” of dozens and dozens of rounds being fired.

Investigators confirmed to Eyewitness News that this fight between three men was the start of trouble.
The District Attorney’s Office says a man identified as Greg Jackson in video Eyewitness News has been showing shoots at a man identified as Micah Townes. Townes then fired back at Jackson. Jackson is then pronounced dead at the scene.
A third individual is being identified as Garner, who is in the hospital facing multiple charges. Garner is facing aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer charges.
Police say they saw Garner firing down from 3rd and American Streets in the direction of South Street. A police officer engaged Garner, fired upon Garner and wounded him in the hand.
Garner then showed up at another shooting scene Philadelphia police were at, at a 4th and Bainbridge Streets, and gave police a story that he had been shot at the scene on South Street.
“It’s our belief was that a friend or was with Micah Townes when the initial altercation starts. After the initial altercation, guns were drawn by Gregory Jackson and Micah Townes,” Joanne Pescatore, chief of the homicide unit at the Philadelphia DA’s Office, said. “Gregory Jackson shoots at Micah Townes first. Micah Townes returns fire, shooting and killing Gregory Jackson. As a result of that, Quran Garner then begins to fire down the street, toward South Street, toward where the initial confrontation took place. It is at that point that Philadelphia police began to shoot after Quran Garner pulls a gun, has the gun out and looks in their direction. They shoot at him, shooting his hand. He’s currently at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital undergoing surgery for a result of injuries sustained when the police shot back at him.”
Prosecutors said the gun Garner used was a ghost gun with an extended magazine.
“I’d like to thank our PPD investigators, the ATF, The FBI, and the United States Marshall’s Service for their swift and diligent work in identifying and apprehending two individuals wanted in connection to the horrific shooting incident that occurred Saturday evening on South Street,” Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said in a statement. “That being said, there is still more work to do. The PPD will continue to work with all of our law enforcement and community partners to identify and apprehend each and every individual responsible for these heinous crimes.”
Prosecutors stressed both Jackson, who died in the shootout, and Townes were permitted to carry.
Police recovered multiple weapons.
“I think there were about 70 officers at least in that few block area and they didn’t seem to care that there was a police officer in sight,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said.
Kenney pushed back on claims there were not enough officers, pointing to the guns for turning a fight into a deadly event.
He says short-term he’s leveraging additional officers from state police. He also says declaring a state of emergency isn’t the answer.
“The National Guard is not trained or licensed to do law enforcement,” Kenney said.
He also says he’ll consider curfews on a case-by-case basis, along with crowd control policy changes.
“It’s a touchy situation. You tell people they can’t be at a specific place when they are just going about their business, shopping or eating. The issue of law enforcement is it’s a balance: What do you do to keep people safe but at the same time what do you do to not their rights?” Kenney said.
