KEMP -- A man who shot a Kaufman County constable three times after being pulled over on a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 175 Monday, remained at large Wednesday evening.

Pct. 4 Constable Kenneth Garvin was listed in stable condition at Baylor Medical Center after being shot by a man about 5 p.m. Monday.

Garvin suffered wounds to the neck, thigh and lower abdomen. Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes said the neck injury was "superficial," but that the wound to the abdomen was more serious.

Four Henderson County deputies spent most of Monday night assisting officers in Kaufman County before the search was called off about 3:30 a.m.

The ass
ilant has been described as a black male with a light complexion and a lower pierced lip.

The man was driving a Ford Excursion, which had been reported stolen from the Prestige Ford dealership in Gar

land on March 28.

Byrnes said Garvin pulled
the vehicle over just before 5 p.m. Monday.

"As of now I have no idea why Constable Garvin stopped the vehicle," Byrnes said at the scene early Monday evening. "However, I don't think Constable Garvin knew the vehicle was stolen. Apparently, shots came from the Excursion as he approached it. The first went over his shoulder, another glazed his neck, I'm uncertain where the others went."

Garvin reportedly returned fire, then called in the shooting from his car. It is unknown whether Garvin shot the suspect.

The Ford Excursion was abandoned and found at a mobile home park just a few minutes after officers arrived on the scene. But there was no sign of the assailant.

The area was sealed off and bloodhound
s were also used in the search, as was a DPS helicopter. Approximately 75 officers were utilized in the manhunt.

Garvin was airflighted to Baylor Medical Center where he underwent surgery for
his
injuries Monday night. Garvin was reportedly in stable condition.

It was unclear why G
arvin -pulled the man over but Byrnes indicated there was fresh damage to a headlight assembly on the right front side of the vehicle.

The Dallas County Sheriff's Department was putting the stolen vehicle through a crime-scene investigation Tuesday hoping to recover more evidence.

The investigation is continuing and surrounding law enforcement agents have been given identifying information.
