Police Seek 'Distraction' Robbers
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Overland Park police warned shoppers Monday to keep their eyes on their purses and wallets.
Two women were committing what police called "distraction" robberies, mostly in shopping areas along 119th Street, KCTV5's Liana Joyce reported live on "KCTV5 News at 4 p.m."
The women, who were caught on tape at a grocery sto
e, preyed on women who put their purses in shopping carts at grocery or department stores or who put them on a jewelry store counter.
"Someone will come up to you in the store and talk to you ab
out what you're looking at or talk to you about something, and while they have you distracted, the other person is stealing your wallet or y
our purse," said Capt. Simon Happer, of the Overland Park Police Department.
Police asked anyone who recognized the women to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
Rather than putting purses in a shopping cart, police said women should keep them on their shoulders or in their hands.
