SAN FRANCISCO - A suburban San Jose school district agreed to pay $1.1 million Tuesday to settle a lawsuit brought by six gay students who said they were subjected to beatings, death threats and other harassment.

The Morgan Hill district also agreed to hold training sessions for students and teachers to discourage anti-gay harassment.

Of the $1.1 million, $5
0,000 will be divided among the six gay and lesbian plaintiffs, former students who sued in 1998.

They said that fellow students threw food and rocks at them, beat them, taunted them and subjected th
em t
o other abuse. They said that their complaints were ignored by teachers
and administrators.

The program to discourage gay bashing will start this year and run through 2008. Faculty members must participate in regular meetings and seventh- and ninth-graders must attend a 50-minute program.

"Although the district believes it has no liability in the matter, it has agreed to this settlement agreement to avoid the costs and uncertainties of trial in order that the district can remain focused on its primary goal of educating students," the school system said in a statement.
