Mother Blows Whistle When Sex Offender Referees Youth Game
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Christopher Hixon has been a registered sexual offender since he was convicted of lewd and lascivious on a minor three years ago. But last weekend, he was referee at a youth basketball game at the Emmet Reed Center on West 6th Street -- a city recreational facility.
Ayesha Covington, the mother of the 10-year-old that Hixon molested, was shocked when she found out Hixon was being allowed to associate with young people.
"He had on a uniform," Covington said. "He's a referee now."
Covington said she approached him and he immedi
ately left the game. When she called the city's Department of Parks and Recreation and found out that background checks are n
ot required for officials of youth sports, since they do not have unsupervised contact with children.
Although he didn't break any rules because no background check was required, now that Hixon's criminal history was brought to the city's attention, he won't be back.
"When we learned about it, we immediately removed him. He is no longer going to be on (city) property," spokeswoman Pam Wilson told Channel 4's Charmayne Brown.
The city is now doing background checks on its other referees. Those results should be back later in the week.
Covington said she's not so sure he'll stay away and is spreading word about Hixon, so people will be on the lookout in case he returns to their community.
