Starkenya Banks (Chicago Police Department)

A 20-year-old South Side woman was ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail this morning, accused in the shaking death of her 2-month-old daughter.

Starkenya Banks, of the 7100 block of South Yates Boulevard, faces first-degree murder charges. Her daughter Omaria Beckon was found unresponsive at her home Thursday night, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police have said Omaria suffered from shaken baby syndrome.

Assistant State’s Attorney William Hall said in court that Banks told police she shook the baby “two or three times” to stop her from crying and dropped the girl on a tile floor of the apartment. When the child did not wake up for a feeding four hours later, Banks called for an ambulance, Hall said.

Teen Charged With Child Abuse Of Infant

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 16-year-old was arrested Sunday after an infant was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Javarris Lane is charged with aggravated child abuse.

Jacksonville police were called to a home in the 2200 block of West First Street in Northwest Jacksonville just after 10 a.m.

Police said they went into the back bedroom and found an adult trying to perform CPR on the unresponsive infant on a bed. The girl, who's about a year old, according to neighbors, was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in life-threatening condition, then transferred to Wolfson Children's Hospital. Homicide detectives were called into the investigation.

Neighbors said the girl is Lane's niece.

Lane told officers the child fell from a bed in the room where she was playing a game, according to a police report.

Police said there was a twin bed in that bedroom that measured 20 inches from its highest point to the floor.

Investigators said the distance from the top of the bed to the floor was "not reasonable for the fall to be the cause" for the child's injuries, according to a police report.

Lane later made admissions that were redacted from the report and "used a doll to show" police what he had done, according to the report.

"It really had shocked me because I was like, 'Oh my God. They brought the baby out and it was like weak and laid out,'" neighbor Leshae Smith said.

Lane was eventually arrested and booked into the Duval County Jail.

The Department of Children and Families is also investigating.

Three to five seconds is the amount of time a South Middleton Township man told investigators he shook his infant daughter after she woke up crying.

According to Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed, that may be all it took to kill his 4-week-old baby girl on Sept. 1.

"Three to five seconds is his verbatim statement," Freed said. "What the medical evidence will say about that, may or may not be something different.

"Based on my experience in cases of this nature, these babies are so small it doesn't take much."

Justin Lamont Thompson, 33, of South Middleton Township was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person Thursday.

The charges were announced at a Friday morning press conference held by Freed.

Thompson is being held in Cumberland County Prison without bail and is "tentatively" scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 28, according to Freed.

Freed estimated the maximum sentence for all charges, if Thompson is convicted, would be around 40 years in prison.

What happened

Thompson called 911 at 7:21 a.m. Sept. 1 because his 4-week-old daughter, Ahzyre Thompson, was not breathing, Freed said. The infant was taken to Carlisle Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

A police investigation into Ahzyre's death began almost immediately.

"The coroner was called to the scene, pursuant to our procedures, and, based on what he saw, he then made a call to state police," Freed said.

Cumberland County Coroner Todd Eckenrode reported seeing retinal hemorrhages in the infant's eyes, consistent with being shaken.

Additionally, while in a hospital waiting area, Ahzyre's 6-year-old sister told a hospital security guard "someone should arrest my daddy, he was beating on my sister," Freed said.

An autopsy was performed the next day, but investigators only recently received the results.

"In keeping with our experience of autopsies on infants and young children ... results often take a few weeks to come in," Freed said. "That's based on the physiology and the age of the child."

The autopsy confirmed retinal hemorrhages, as well as hemorrhages in the brain and spinal chord, consistent with a shaking injury.

"Additionally, the autopsy did rule out other causes of death," Freed added.

Following the receipt of the autopsy results, investigators arranged for an interview with Thompson, which was held Thursday. During the course of the interview the man admitted to shaking the infant, Freed said.

Specifics

Thompson told investigators that Ahzyre woke up and was crying at 3 a.m. Sept. 1, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

The man said he picked the infant up and shook her for three to five seconds. Thompson then said he changed Ahzyre's diaper, fed her from a bottle and laid her back down, according to the affidavit.

Both Freed and Commander Steven Junkin from State police at Carlisle noted that the investigation will continue past the filing of these charges.

"The filing of charges does not end the case for us," Junkin said.

Freed said that he is confident in the investigators assigned to this case.

"My fondest hope would be, in a case like this, that the quantum of evidence is such that the child didn't have to testify," Freed added, referring to Ahzyre's sister.

The father of a 4-week-old infant has been charged with the baby girl's death, according to District Attorney David Freed.

Justin Lamont Thompson, 33, of South Middleton Township, was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.

The charges were announced today during a press conference on the death of Ahzyre Thompson, who was transported to Carlisle Regional Medical Center on Sept. 1, but was pronounced dead when she arrived at the hospital. Police had been investigating the death.

The District Attorney's Office will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. today at the courthouse to discuss the death of a 4-week old girl from South Middleton Township on Sept. 1.

Police have been investigating the death of Ahzyre Thompson, whose death is being treated as suspicious. An autopsy from the Cumberland County Coroner was unable to determine the cause and manner of death.

The infant was taken to Carlisle Regional Medical Center via ambulance shortly before 7:30 a.m. Sept. 1, and EMS crews performed CPR on the girl, but once she arrived at the hospital, it was determined that she was deceased.

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

A four-week-old Cumberland County girl who died Thursday morning after arriving at a hospital in cardiac arrest had traumatic injuries to her head and neck, according to court documents in the case.

Authorities said in the documents that Ahzyre Thompson had blood in her eyes and bruises to her face, and that the injuries were consistent with "substantial external force being applied to the child's head."

Ahzyre was pronounced dead at Carlisle Regional Medical Center after being brought from her home at 9 Wiltshire East in South Middleton Township at around 7:30 a.m., authorities said.

The court documents indicate that Ahzyre's father, Justin Thompson, called 911 to report that the baby was not breathing.

Thompson told police that the girl awoke crying at around 3 a.m., but went back to sleep in his bed after a bottle, according to the documents. He related that he was the only adult in the home Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

An autopsy was performed Friday, but Coroner Todd Eckenrode said the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined pending further examination and investigation.

The documents also indicate that police searched the home and seized a bassinet, swing and stroller from the master bedroom, as well as sheets that appeared to be stained with blood.

Thompson has not been charged in the child's death, but police said in the court papers that as the only caretaker in the home, it is "highly probable" that he is responsible for the child's injuries.

"We have to gather information," District Attorney Dave Freed said. "I think clearly, based on what's written in the affidavit, we have suspicions that this was something that was more than an accident, and that's why we have to have these investigative steps."

Thompson is one of 20 people who were arrested in June in connection with a cocaine distribution ring that was operating in the Carlisle area.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 1-year-old girl who had been hospitalized in critical condition since last week has died, and a teen is now charged with murder in her death.

Charges against 16-year-old Javarris Lane were upgraded Wednesday from aggravated child abuse to murder in the death of Alexandria Williams. Lane's next court date is Oct. 11.

Jacksonville police were called to a home in the 2200 block of West First Street in Northwest Jacksonville on Sept. 25.

Police said they went into the back bedroom and found an adult trying to perform CPR on the unresponsive infant on a bed. The girl was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in life-threatening condition, then transferred to Wolfson Children's Hospital.

Lane, with his father present in the home, told officers the child fell from a bed in the room where she was playing a game, according to police.

Police said there was a twin bed in that bedroom that measured 20 inches from its highest point to the floor.

Lane initially said the girl had just been sitting on his lap while he was playing a video game, and he then placed her on the twin bed, police said. Lane told police that the girl then must have rolled off the bed on her own, police said.

Investigators said they explained to Lane that the distance from the top of the bed to the floor was "not reasonable for the fall to be the cause" for the child's severe injuries, according to a police report.

Police said Lane then admitted that the girl began crying, so he picked her up and shook her, while he was shaking her, the girl's head hit the dresser twice. Police said Lane used a doll to show how he shook the child and struck her head on the dresser.

Lane was arrested and booked into the Duval County Jail. The girl died Thursday at the hospital, and on Friday, the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

The Department of Children and Families is also investigating.

Mother of man accused of shaking daughter says her son is innocent

Ivryee Flowers' mother (far left) lashes out, outside a courtroom Friday, where her son was pleading not guilty to charges that he shook his baby daughter.

TACOMA —

The mother of a man accused of violently shaking his baby daughter lashed out in court Friday as the man pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree assault of a child.

As Ivryee Flowers, 20, entered his plea, his mother began shouting that her son was innocent.

“I do believe that it was an accident,” the woman yelled. “That’s why I didn’t want my son talking to you guys, and you guys sat there and tricked him like that.”

Flowers’ mother left the court angry after Judge Gary Steiner issued an order that Flowers have no contact with any family members. Flowers’ mother blamed police for tricking him into a confession.

Flowers is accused of shaking his 8-month-old daughter. According to a probable cause affidavit, Flowers was angry because he had to stop playing a video game on Wednesday night when the girl wouldn’t stop crying.

“I just shook her a little bit to get her to stop crying,”
Flowers said, according to the documents.

According to court documents, when Flowers was informed it is not likely the girl will survive, he said, “I know I’m going to get life.”

“It’s horrible, horrible, horrible,” said Amber Miller, one of Flowers’ neighbors. “Especially the time of year and just to lose someone so young and so fragile.”

Flowers remains in the Pierce County Jail with bail set at $500,000

Father of child who died here charged with murder

The father of a 2-year-old child who died here in November has been charged with her murder.

Nassir J. Elum, 28, of Philadelphia, was charged with the death of Nalan Elum, also known as Kalinda Rose Conklin
, who was being cared for by a family in Lititz at the time of her death.

Police say Elum assaulted his daughter in March 2010, when she was just 2 months old. The child suffered a severe brain injury, due to being shaken.

The baby never walked or talked, or even ate on her own. She suffered seizures and could not regulate her oxygen level or body temperature, and required constant care.

She died Nov. 30 of last year at the Elizabeth Township home of Michael and Thelma Conklin, who were her guardians and preparing to adopt her. The couple has 12 adopted special-needs children and two biological sons, ranging in age from 1 to 15.

"That day was the roughest day for us," said Mrs. Conklin, who was holding the child when she died.

After an autopsy, Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni determined that the child's death was due to her March 2010 injuries and ruled her death a homicide.

Elum was formally charged with murder and endangering the welfare of children Dec. 12. He is being held in the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center.

Union City police have charged a couple with murder in the death of her 9-month-old daughter, who was found unresponsive in her crib at home Monday.

The mother, Cella Copeland, has been charged with murder and cruelty to children. The stepfather, Otis Lee Bennett, faces murder, cruelty to children and aggravated assault charges. Another family member in the household, Hetty Bennett, has been charged with cruelty to children.

Police were called to the girl's home in the 6000 block of Goodson Street on Monday afternoon. Medical personnel performed CPR on the child until the child was pronounced dead at South Fulton Medical Center, according to Union City police spokeswoman Detective Gloria Hodgson. She had no other details about how the child died. Hodgson said Union City authorities continue to investigate the incident.

Doctors reportedly suspect the baby was a victim of "Shaken Baby Syndrome," according to Channel 2 Action News. Police told Channel 2 the house was filled with trash, insect infested and had no electricity or gas.

Friday city officials ruled the death of a 1-year-old girl in West Baltimore a homicide.

Police found the child shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday in a home in the 800 block of N. Stricker Street in the Harlem Park area. She was pronounced dead at Maryland Shock Trauma Center upon arrival. A 22-year-old man has been charged with second-degree in the murder by the state medical examiner's office.

Officials did not release any additional information, including a cause of death, but court records show Sharmell Thomas was charged Thursday with second-degree murder, first degree child abuse resulting in death, and related charges.

Dudley man accused of abusing 2-month-old baby

James Montgomery Jr.

Dudley, N.C. — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday it has arrested a Dudley man accused of abusing and seriously injuring a 2-month-old baby.

James Linwood Montgomery Jr., 22, of 112 Rhodes Drive, was charged with two counts of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and was held on a $211,000 secured bond.

He is related to the baby, but authorities did not say how.

The baby, whose name and gender were not released, was taken Duplin General Hospital and Pitt Memorial Hospital on July 27 with life-threatening injuries that were consistent with being shaken, according to the sheriff's office.

The baby suffered multiple rib fractures, extensive intracranial injury, subdural hematoma, a broken arm, broken leg and skull fracture. The baby was released from the hospital, "is doing well" and was placed in foster care pending the investigation, according to the sheriff's office.

"The mother of the baby has been a tremendous asset to the investigation and is not considered a suspect," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Montgomery also had two outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court on traffic violations in Bladen County, authorities said.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Aggravated manslaughter charges have been filed against a southern New Jersey man accused of fatally shaking a friend’s infant son.

Atlantic County prosecutors say 19-year-old Daquan Davis of Atlantic City also faces child endangerment charges in the death of the 6-month-old child. He was being held Saturday on $750,000 bail, and it was not known if he had retained an attorney.

Acting County Prosecutor Jim McClain says Davis was caring for the infant while the child’s mother was at work. When she returned home around 4 a.m. Friday, she found the boy was unresponsive and called 911.

The child was pronounced dead a short time later, and authorities were notified. A joint investigation by the prosecutor’s office and Atlantic City authorities ensued, and Davis was arrested late Friday night.

Randolph man accused of beating baby almost to death

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A 25-year-old Randolph man accused of beating his child, possibly to the point of blindness and death, pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and battery on a child on Monday.

Jaheel Robinson, a former semi-professional football player, appeared in Quincy District Court and was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail. He is due back in court on Dec. 21.

According to the Norfolk District Attorney's Office, sometime last Wednesday or Thursday, Robinson was reportedly walking down the basement stairs with the child when his knee gave out.

The baby's mother, Robinson's girlfriend, called 911 early Thursday when she found Robinson in the basement holding the injured child.

The 4-month-old child was taken to Boston Children's Hospital where he has been on a ventilator and a feeding tube since Thursday afternoon. During the incident, the child suffered injuries to his eyes and his brain, all of which are hemorrhaging.

Assistant Norfolk District Attorney Lisa Beatty said the child's eyes were separated from his retinas, and if the child survives, he will most likely be blind.

Medical professionals said the child's injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

The baby also had a fracture in one of his legs and a bruise on one ear. It is believed that these injuries pre-date last week's incident.

The child was previously hospitalized at Children's Hospital after a vomiting episode; however, the child was discharged by his parents against medical advice.

Man accused of shaking, seriously injuring crying baby

Ryne-Garoy.jpg

A Cobb County man remained in jail Monday night, more than two weeks after allegedly shaking and throwing a crying infant left in his care, according to police.

Ryne Dale Garoy, 30, of a Marietta address, faces a first-degree cruelty to children charge for seriously injuring the baby, according to his arrest warrant, obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Garoy turned himself in Nov. 19 and has since remained in the Cobb County jail, where he is being held without bond, booking records show.

Garoy was babysitting the baby between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Nov. 10 when the alleged abuse occurred, police said.

“Said accused took the baby into the living room where he aggressively shook the victim to have the victim stop crying,” the warrant states. “Said accused then took the victim into a bedroom and threw the victim down to the floor.”

The baby, whose name was not released, remains hospitalized with serious injuries, including a skull fracture, according to police.
