A 21-year-old transgender was shot dead outside of Maryland mall by a group of teenagers, police say. The victim was named by authorities as Zella Ziona. Police in Gaithersburg are searching for a group of teenagers in relation to the shooting which occurred at around 6 p.m. on October 15 at the Montgomery Village Crossing Shopping Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m.
Authorities believe that Ziona was targeted in the shooting. WLJA reports Ziona was previously known as DeAndre Smith and that she lived close to the mall. On the night of the shooting, witnesses saw Ziona arguing with a group of men at the back of the shopping center close to a group of dumpsters. A witness told WLJA said “I only saw one gun. t just happened so fast, and kind of scary.” Montgomery County Police Officer Rick Goodale told the station “They did find a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Detectives do not believe this was a random shooting.”
Ziona says she’s from Trinidad.
