PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib was arrested and jailed early Thursday on charges of simple battery and resisting arrest without violence. Both charges are misdemeanors.

He was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. and was later released from the Pinellas County Jail after posting a $300 bond.

The Florida Highway Patrol arrest report says Talib punched a taxi driver in the neck and ear after he picked up the 23-year-old cornerback and two other men late Wednesday night.

Talib, from the University of K
ansas, was the Bucs' first round draft pick in the 2008 college draft.

Already this off-season, Talib swung his helmet at a teammate and accidentally struck another. At the NFL's Rookie Symposium, he got into a fight with then-teammate Cory Boyd.

Tampa Bay Bucs Player Wanted in Texas Shooting

Police in a Dallas suburb issued an arrest warrant for Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib, accusing him of firing a gun at his sister's boyfriend.

Garland police said Tuesday they believe Talib and his mother, Okolo Talib, shot at the man March 21. The man wasn't injured. Earlier that day, the man had been listed as a suspect in a disturbance and was charged with assault and interference with an emergency phone call from that incident.

"We were very fortunate that no one was shot and killed that day," Garland police spokesman Joe Harn told the Tampa Tribune.

Authorities issued arrest warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for Talib and his mother. The charge is a second degree felony punishable by five to 20 years in prison.

Police said Aqib Talib is set to turn himself in later this week, while his mother turned herself in Tuesday. His agent, Todd France, did not immediately return a call.

"We are deeply troubled by the serious charges filed against Aqib Talib," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said in a statement Tuesday. "Due to current labor circumstances, we will withhold any further comment or action."

Buccaneers teammate Jeff Faine told the Tribune that he is worried about Talib.

"I hope everything works out for Aqib Talib. It's unfortunate to see him caught up in that situation and dealing with what he's dealing with right now. I just hope it all works out for him," Faine told the paper.

Talib, who went to L.V. Berkner High School in the Dallas suburb of Richardson, played at the University of Kansas. Bond for his warrant is set at $25,000.

This has been the latest in a line of incidents involving the 2008 first-round pick.

In 2009, Talib was charged with simple battery and resisting arrest in connection with an assault on a taxi driver in Florida. He was suspended for the opening game in 2010 because of the incident.

Report: Talib to be indicted on felony charge

Citing Texas law enforcement officials, the St. Petersburg Times reports that Aqib Talib will indeed be indicted by a Dallas grand jury on felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The indictment is expected on Friday. "Official results don't come out until tomorrow," Talib's lawyer, Frank Perez, cautioned. Talib's charge is a second degree felony that carries a punishment of 2-20 years in prison. The NFL can't enforce discipline during the lockout, but commissioner Roger Goodell is known to be logging arrests. Talib's problems may be far bigger than what the league can impose if he's ultimately found guilty.

News 8 has received exclusive video of Aqib Talib being brought to Medical City Dallas in his White Rolls-Royce the night he was shot in June.

The Denver Broncos cornerback had a gunshot wound to his leg. Dallas police released the video and pictures from the hospital from June 5.

While in his hospital bed, Talib initially told detectives he had been shot while at a park.

They pressed him on his story, and eventually his attorney, Frank Perez, sent DPD a letter saying Talib admitted he accidentally shot himself and lied to officers.

"Mr. Talib stated he was disoriented and was on morphine and that the police wouldn't let him see his family,” Perez wrote. “And the thought of losing his football career that he just said he was shot."

(The Hill) — Authorities said the brother of former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib is a person of interest in a shooting at a youth football game in Texas that occurred on Saturday that killed a coach.
A statement released by Lancaster, Texas officials indicated on Sunday that Yaqub Salik Talib is considered a suspect in the incident at the Lancaster Community Park in Dallas County. There is a warrant out for his arrest.
Police said Lancaster police officers arrived at the scene where an argument had ensued between the coaching staff and officiating crew. During a physical altercation, police said someone discharged a firearm that struck Coach Mike Hickmon.
The Dallas County medical examiner’s office confirmed the identity of the lone victim in the incident as the 43-year-old Hickmon, Dallas Morning News reported.
A video of the incident on social media shows a coach arguing with a game official as a brawl erupts in the background.

North Dallas United Bobcats owner Tevar Watson told the newspaper that he was aware of the incident and that his team was among those competing.
“We don’t condone any of that, there is no place for anything like that to happen in youth sports — in any type of sport,” Watson told the Morning News.
Aqib Talib, who recently joined Amazon’s Prime Video as a studio analyst for its “Thursday Night Football” NFL coverage, released a statement through his attorney expressing his condolences, according to TMZ.
The 36-year-old Talib enjoyed a fruitful NFL career, making five Pro Bowls, two All-Pro teams, and winning a Super Bowl championship with the Denver Broncos in 2015 during his twelve years in the league.
Talib also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, and Miami Dolphins.
