Last summer a quiet west Jackson neighborhood was stunned when a father of Two, was shot to death in his home. Now an arrest in the case is even more alarming. Yesterday, Jackson police arrested Elisha Hughes in the murder of her husband Brian Hughes.

Friends of 32-year-old Brian Hughes say they were caught off guard when they heard his wife Elisha, was charged in his murder. Richard Myers worked alongside brian at Delphi Packard in Clinton.

Brian Hughes, was found shot nine times inside his home on Fairw
ood drive, June 3rd of last year. His wife Elisha initially told police she was asleep when the shooting happened, and never saw his attacker. No weapon was ever found at the home, but sources say shell casings were, and could now be used as evidence. Four months after the murder, Elisha Hughes picutred at the far right, stood behind Brian Hughes brother during a taping of Crimestoppers, as he pleaded for help in solving the murder.

Myers says, "Everybody liked him, you wouldn't think something like this would happen to Brian. She'll have her day in court, she's innocent till proven guilty even if she's not guilty whoever committed this crime against Brian will be found."

Elisha Hughes is a Third grade teacher at Lee elementary in South Jackson. She has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the murder investigation.


The Brian Hughes murder case will be brought before the Hinds county grand jury, in the coming months.

Murder Suspect in Court

Third grade teacher 27-year-old Elisha Hughes went before a judge Thursday, facing charges in the death of her husband Brian Hughes. She left court still in cuffs. The judge refused to grant bond, at least for now.

Hughes Attorney Lulu Anderson said, "I would have preferred if he would have set a reasonable bail today; however, it was in his discrection at least we will have a hearing tomorrow where we will bring this up again because it is my opinion Ms. Hughes is entitled to reasonable bail."

Friday, Hughes' attorney will argue two points for her release: one being that she is a teacher and the other being that she is a mother.

Anderson says, "She has two little girls at home they need her. She is innocent of these charges and
we expect that at the end of this case, that will be known by ev
eryone."

During Thursday's hearing, family for both sides filled rows on opposite sides of the courtroom. They didn't talk to each other, and declined interviews from the media as they left.

Police say no murder weapon was found at the home. But sources tell WLBT news shell casings were found outside.

Hughes told investigators she was asleep when she was awakened by the gunshots that killed her husband. The evidence police say they have that contradicts those claims is now sealed until it can be reviewed by a Hinds county grand jury.
