Three Charged In Shooting Of Franklin County Athlete

FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. -- Franklin County authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of a popular basketball and football player for Bunn High School that happened Saturday night.

Marc Philippeaux was shot and killed at a party Saturday night after his team won a big game.

There's no school Monday at Bunn High School because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. But grief counselors will meet with the basketball players this afternoon.

On the football team, hes known as Number 81-- a 6 foot, 5 inch force of velocity and vigor. Those who knew him say it's how Phillipeaux tackled everything in life.

"He wanted to do the best he could in everything he was doing," said Gerald Melton, Philippeaux's basketball coach. "He worked so hard, came in every day with a smile, just pleasant to coach."

Saturday night, Phillippeaux and his basketball teammates were all smiles after a huge win -- and came to a house party to celebrate the victory.

More than 100 others helped them celebrate.

"I've been told that he didn't attend these parties often, but due to a big win, and to a good ball game, he decided to go," said Jerry Jones, Franklin County Sheriff.

The sheriff's office says Charles Mayo, Elliot Hazelwood, and Antoine Perry started a fight at the party and that one of them randomly fired a gun -- similar to an AK-47-- into the crowd[/

"He was a super nice kid, just in the wrong place at the wrong time," Jones said.

Security Threat Creates Court Changes For Three Charged With Murder

FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. -- Security was heightened Tuesday for the court appearance of three men arrested in the shooting death of a popular Franklin County student.

Antoine Perry, 19, Charles Mayo, 20, and Eliot Hazelwood, 25, are charged with first-degree murder. They appeared in court, despite concerns that armed supporters of the men would cause trouble.

There were no arrests Tuesday, but family members and friends faced tight security measures. The judge read the accused men their rights before sending them back to jail without bond. Court records show all three men had prior run-ins with the law.

Sheriff's investigators say the men took turns firing shots outside
a Franklin County party over the weekend, killing Bunn High School
athlete Marc Philippeaux. They believe Perry was the person who fired the fatal shot. They also said Philippeaux was a random victim of the shooting and was hit in the head from about 50 yards away.

Investigators received a break in the case Tuesday when someone's tip led them to the alleged murder weapon -- an SKS rifle. The weapon was found on a rural road in Franklin County. Authorities do not know who the weapon belongs to, but they said it is cheap and easy to buy.

Philippeaux's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Bunn High School. Authorities said their investigation is ongoing and others could be charged as accessories.
