Two dead dogs, exotic animals found after a man is arrested for assaulting ex fiance

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One man is in jail after he assaulted ex fiance, her daughter, killed two dogs and had prohibited exotic animals.

On Dec. 8, deputies observed dead animal, exotic animals and feces all over the home of a domestic violence victim.

The victim fled her home to a next-door neighbor to get away from Roberto Collins, 36, after he threw a laundry basket at her and her daughter, according to an affidavit.


The victim told deputies about 7 a.m., Collins left the home to clean his brother’s church.

Collins called the victim and he became very angry with her because she had taken her car keys off his key chain.

The suspect returned home, the victim advised she was leaving him and breaking off their engagement.

As they continued you argue, Collins then picked a laundry basket full of clothes and threw it at the victim, said the affidavit.

The victim and her daughter, which she was holding, were hit and the daughter obtained a scratch over her left eye.

The victim then told officers Collins began punching the her in the head and face. She fled next door to call 911, said the affidavit.

When deputies arrived on scene, the victim said she heard four shots fired before they arrived.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the home and they heard one more gunshot.

They observed Collins walking around the backyard and ordered him to drop all weapons to place his hands in the air, deputies said.

Collins was taken into custody.



Deputies observed the suspect slurring his words and believed him to be very intoxicated. He was transported to Regional One for observation, deputies said.

Deputies discovered a Glock 19 about 10 to 12 feet from the back door, two dead dog carcasses lying in the backyard and four other dogs running on leashes all in the backyard, they said.

In the home, deputies found a dog in a cage, plus two rattle snakes, two alligators and Gila Monster in aquariums. There was also dead iguana in one of the aquariums.

The home was a mess as deputies found garbage and feces all over the floor and furniture, no beds to sleep on and roaches crawling out of the fridge, according to the affidavit.

Animal Control, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Department of Children’s Services were contacted. Also, the Memphis Zoo to take the prohibited exotic animals.

Collins is charged with six counts of animal cruelty, one count of reckless endangerment, one count of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, one count of possession of a deadly weapon and one count of domestic assault resulting in bodily harm, court records show.
