UGA sees increase in black applicants, total applicants down
ATHENS, Ga. - While the University of Georgia is seeing a drop in undergraduate applications, the number of black applicants is up, the school's admissions office said.
It is good news for UGA, which has increased efforts to attract more minority students.
Race and ethnicity will not be used as a factor in this year's admission decisions. But a task force is at work determining how race and ethnicity can legally be used in future years to increase diversity at the university.

ups that should be considered and to determine "critical mass" - the point at which UG
A would be considered sufficiently diverse.
The university dropped its last race-conscious policy in 2001 after a federal judge ruled it unconstitutional. But the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last June that schools can use race as a factor in admissions as long as it is not the only factor.
Meanwhile, Bob Spatig, senior associate director of admissions, said the overall drop in applicants was expected. He said it is because fewer less-qualified students are applying.
Some students may have been discouraged from applying because of a new writing requirement on the application, Spatig said. Previously, students wrote two short essays and one long essay. This year, students were required to write five short essays.
"It tends to drive off some people who didn't want to write," Spatig said. &q
uot;But if they don't want to write, they won't be competitive for UGA."
