Arrest Made in Murder of Eastern Shore Woman

Officials in Northampton County have charged a man with murder in connection with the death of a 22-year old woman.

The body of Tara Mitchell Owens was found in a cornfield near her Eastern Shore home on August 27th.

Thursday, authorities arrested Umah Joaquing Owens.

Sheriff's Deputies were initially called to Owens' home in the 24,000 block of Lankford Highway on a report of missing person.

While on the scene, deputies found her body.

At the time of the discovery, friends of Tara Owens told WAVY News 10 there were signs of a struggle.

Umah Owens is being held without bond in the Northampton County Jail.

Interracial Relationships Become More Common


Interracial relationships and marriages are becoming more common in the U.S., according to a new Cornell University study.

The number of interracial marriages jumped tenfold since the 1960s, though the older people are the less likely they are to be with someone of a different race, the study found.

"This trend reflects the increasing acceptance of interracial relationships in today's society," said study co-author Kara Joyner.

Although more young adults are dating and cohabiting with someone of a different race, the study found that interracial relationships are considerably less likely than same-race relationships to lead to marriage.

The researchers found that among 18- to 25-year-olds in 1990 and in 2000, interracial sexual involvement became increasingly common, with the greatest increase seen in c

ohabitating relationships, followed by dating rel
ationships and then marriages.

In 1990, for example, about 14 percent of 18- to 19-year-olds, 12 percent of 20- to 21-year-olds and 7 percent of 34- to 35-year-olds were involved in interracial relationships. Roughly 10 years later, 20 percent of 18- to 19-year-olds and 16 percent of 24- to 25-year-olds were in an interracial relationship.

"In the analyses we did run, however, it looks like involvement in interracial relationships increases with age for Asians," said Joyner.

In a 2003 study, Joyner had reported that adolescents in interracial romances were significantly less willing to reveal their relationship to family and close friends than those in same-race relationships, suggesting that such relationships still do not receive whole-hearted approval by society.

(NORTHAMPTON CO, VA) - More than two months after 22-year-old Tara Mitchell Owens was found dead in a cornfield, her estranged husband has been charged with her murder.

On Thursday, papers were served on her estranged husband, Umah Jacquing Owens, who was already in jail on unrelated charges, Northampton County Sheriff's officials told WVEC.com.

On August 27, authorities went to 24149 Lankford Highway for a report of a m
issing person. They found Mitchell's body in the cornfield behind the house. Owens' two children, Sierra Desiree and Giavanna Monet Owens, were inside.

Authorities said the youngsters may have been alone for as long as 12 hours.

Mr. Owens remains in Northampton County Jail with no bond.

Tara's mother told 13News that Mr. Owens had been abusive to her daughter and that Tara had gotten a protective order to keep him away from her and the children.
