Man charged in fatal shooting of 19-year-old in East Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A man has been charged with murder in a fatal East Columbus shooting that was initially reported as an accidental shooting.

Tejuan Files, 20, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of 19-year-old Caleb Day.

The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday at 3428 Bolton Avenue.

The shooting was reported as an accidental shooting and when officers arrived, they found Day suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses who were in the house when the shooting took place said Day was handling a firearm when it fired, but police said evidence contradicted their statements.

According to court documents, Files was sitting beside Day on a couch and had a handgun in his hand and fired one shot, striking Day.

BLACK-ON-WHITE: BLACK Suspect charged with murder in shooting of WHITE 19-year-old man in east Columbus COLUMBUS, Ohio — Columbus police say a suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of a 19-year-old man on the city's east side. On Saturday around 3:30 p.m., officers were called to a home in the 3400 block of Bolton Avenue just east of Barnett Road on a report of an accidental shooting. When officers got to the scene, they found Caleb Day shot. He was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. According to police, witnesses who were inside the house at the time of the shooting said Day was handling a gun when it discharged. Police said after looking at the evidence, it does not appear Day shot himself. Court records state 20-year-old Tejuan Files III was sitting on a couch next to Day and was holding a gun. Files fired the gun one time and the shot hit Day. Files left the residence after the shooting, but returned sometime later. A witness later identified Files, according to police. Files has been charged with murder in connection with Day's death. He turned himself in to police on Monday.
