MACKAY woman Vari Galletly was put in jail in Africa for her first attempt at trying to start an orphanage.

Since then Mrs Galletly has hired a lawyer to help her so she can successfully open one that will be home to 12 girls.

"I've rented a house and furnished it," Mrs Galletly said.

"I'm getting all the paperwork done... I'm almost there."

She said she was a bit naive in her first attempt to open an orphanage.

"I knew what I was doing was right," Mrs Galletly said.

"But it doesn't matter in Africa, it's a totally different mindset.

"I was only in jail for a few hours and then I had to leave the country."

Mrs Galletly said looking after the girls was the number one priority.

"There's a huge culture difference," she said. "They're beautiful, happy people.

"They've got nothing, but they're still happy."

She can't wait to start helping the orphans, she said.

"I can do so much," Mrs Galletly said.

"I'm concentrating on these girls. They'll need medical treatment and schooling. They just need love, hugs and kisses."

Previously Mrs Galletly had worked with kids on the street as well.

"I used to babysit single mothers' kids while they worked," she said.

"I'm originally from Mackay and now I'm out of retirement working again.

"I'm trying to raise the money to pay for the orphanage. But the house is set up and I've hired two mummas and a guard."
