EL CENTRO, Calif. - Twelve suspected illegal immigrants were injured when the truck they were riding in rolled over while trying to evade a Border Patrol vehicle, officials said Tuesday.

The 12 immigrants from Mexico were riding early Monday in a
Ford pickup truck traveling along a remote road near Niland, near the southeastern edge of the Salton Sea, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver made a U-turn after spotting a
Border
Patrol vehicle parked in front of him. Passengers said the driver turned off the headlights and drove off the road, into the open desert. As he attempted to drive back onto the road, he lost control of the truck, causing
it to roll over and stop on its roof.

None of the people in the truck was wearing a seat belt, according to the CHP.

The passengers flagged down the Border Patrol vehicle for assistance. The most seriously injured were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to broken bones.

The immigrants included 10 men ranging in age from 18 to 35 and two minors, ages 14 and 16. All were from Mexico.

Investigators were trying to determine who was driving the truck.
