An angry Ohio dad has called his son’s killer the “scum of the earth” after confronting him in court.

Rob Healey laid into Anjuan Marion, 18, after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in relation to Ryan Healey’s death in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati. Marion admitted shooting the 25-year-old bartender in the chest from a vehicle in April 2023. While Ryan lay critically injured on the ground close to his home, an unknown person also bent down and stole his wallet.
Marion, who was 16 at the time of the fatal shooting but has since turned 18, also pleaded guilty to gun charges in a separate shooting that happened months later in Ziegler Park, according to the Cincinnati Inquirer. He did not tell the court the reason for his actions, simply saying: “I want to say I'm sorry” in a brief statement. Marion was given a sentence of up to 14 and a half years in jail as part of a plea deal.

Mr Healey, who was one of several family members who spoke during the hearing, told Marion that he had destroyed their lives. During his furious statement, he referred to Marion as “the sociopath sitting in the room with us” and “this scum of the earth”, according to Cincinnati Inquirer.
He also asked Marion, “Are you the one in charge of deciding life or death when you're wielding a firearm?” before going on to call him a “pathetic excuse for a human being.” Mr Healey further revealed how Ryan’s mom had been struck down by horrific bouts of depression and could not leave their property. He said the death had left her “imprisoned in her own home [with] fear and anxiety,” the Cincinnati Inquirer reported.

He later added no jail term would be long enough for Marion before saying: “I hope he lives in pain and suffering for the rest of his life." After his death, an obituary penned to Ryan said he had ‘touched the lives of everyone he met’.

It read: “As a self-proclaimed Ambassador of Cincinnati, you could find Ryan putting smiles on faces all around. Whether it was exploring the city, making loved ones laugh, cooking the greatest food, or connecting with the friends he’s made - Ryan touched the lives of everyone he met. His life was tragically cut short by a selfish act. He is missed and loved by many.”

Other mourners also penned tributes to the young man, saying they were ‘blessed’ to know him. One wrote: “The loss of such a genuine, kind, and vibrant person is a huge loss, not only to your family, but to the world. Ryan was witty, grounded, and the funniest person I have gotten to know. I am eternally grateful for the time spent together as classmates and send my deepest condolences to his entire family and network of friends.”

Another added: “Ryan was a great soul and great friend. Always helped me whenever I was in need. I was blessed to be his neighbor for a few years and I’ll never forget all the fun times we had together. Rest in paradise my brother. Gone too soon.”

Marion was initially charged in juvenile court due to his age at the time of the killing before being transferred to an adult court last year. The judge eventually accepted the plea deal, adding that “Justice can be bittersweet”.
