2 To Stand Trial In Slaying Of Teen Beaten With Skateboard, Stabbed

WYOMING, Mich. (WWJ/AP) – Two western Michigan teens have been ordered to stand trial on murder charges in an alleged thrill kill.

Both appeared Wednesday at a preliminary hearing in Wyoming District Court for the stabbing and beating of a 16-year-old acquaintance in a Grand Rapids-area park.

A Wyoming police detective testified that one of the 15-year-olds confessed to investigators that he had “planned to do it all week” and stabbed Michael White multiple times multiple times in the back, slashed his throat, and beat him with a skateboard.

Police said White had been out with friends that night and his mother got worried when he didn’t come home. His body was found the next morning, March 19, by a resident walking a dog in Lions Park.

The Associated Press isn’t naming the boys charged due to their age. Their trial date was not immediately set.

Teens plead to first-degree murder in stabbing death of boy, 16, at park

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Two teens pleaded guilty Monday, Aug. 15, to first-degree murder in a vicious attack on Michael White, 16, at Wyoming's Lions Park.

Carlos Delgado and Quentin Schafer, both 15 when the March 18 killing occurred, entered pleas before Kent County Circuit Judge George Buth.

Both had agreed to testify against each other.

As part of a plea agreement, Kent County prosecutors will not seek a penalty of life in prison without parole, which is the mandatory punishment for adults convicted of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors would have to request that sentence for a minor but it would not be guaranteed.

Now, Delgado and Schafer, who planned the killing for a week, face minimum prison terms ranging from 30 to 40 years, and maximum of 60.

“I miss him every day,’’ Kelly Ann Hogan told the pair. “Our family will never be the same.’’

Quentin Schafer and Carlos Delgado, both 15, looked down as she spoke. They pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder for the death of White, a 16-year-old junior at Wyoming Park High School.

His body was found March 19 by a man walking his dog at Lions Park in Wyoming. They were arrested within a few days and on Wednesday were both sentenced to a minimum of 40 years behind bars.

A 2012 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court affords them a chance of getting out of prison before they’re old men.

Their attorneys asked that Schafer and Delgado serve a minimum of 30 years, saying both are remorseful.

Kent County Assistant Prosecutor Gerard E. Faber objected.

“This was a savage, brutal, premeditated murder and we are asking for the full 40 years,’’ he told the court.

Kent County Circuit Court Judge George S. Buth agreed.

“This is a brutal, senseless murder,’’ the judge said. “I think we all realize that, especially you two defendants. This is a tragedy all the way around, especially for the victim here and his family.’’

Buth sentenced them to between 40 and 75 years in prison. They’ll be in their mid-50s before they can be considered for parole.
