Police investigate fatal shooting of Rock Hill 2-year-old
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Police expect to file charges in the next few days in a shooting that left a 2-year-old girl dead.
Kenyatta Dixon was shot in the forehead with a .38-caliber revolver Sunday night and died a day later, authorities said.
People in the home said a 3-year-old relative accidentally pulled the trigger, police said. It's also possible the gun went off after slipping from a table, said Rock Hill Police Sgt. Keith Dugan.
At least four people were in the home when the girl was shot. Investigators are still trying to determine who brought the gun into the home, police Lt. Thomas Hutchinson said.
Police expect to file charges in the next few days, said Hutchinson, who did not want to giv
e other details about the shooting because of the ongoin
g investigation.
Seven South Carolina children died from unintentional firearm wounds before their 15th birthday between 2000 and 2002, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Family friend Erika Brunson said a relative of the girl arrived crying at her door Sunday night after the shooting. Police say Kenyatta's mother was at work, but an aunt and grandmother were home.
Relatives told her they thought Kenyatta was in bed sleeping when they heard the gunshot. They rushed to the kitchen and found the toddler in a pool of blood, Brunson said. Several children under 6 live in the house, she said.
Dugan said police haven't responded to disturbances at Kenyatta's house before.
Dixon is the second child in her extended family to die in a shooting in the past two years.

n, died in April 2003 after a friend shot him while playing with a gun at another relative's
house in Rock Hill, according to records and family friends.
Thompson was playing with several children at his aunt's Rock Hill home when 16-year-old Quancy McNiel fired a handgun in the room.
McNiel pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
