CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department says it has arrested three people in a series of nearly 30 downtown property crimes dating back to September.
Police released the names of the suspects and their charges:
  • Quantero Phillips, 30, of Moncks Corner, faces a total of 20 charges including four counts of breaking into a motor vehicle, nine counts of financial transaction card fraud, three counts of financial transaction card theft, multiple property crime enhancement charges as well as second-degree burglary
  • Marlin Smalls, 52, of North Charleston, is charged with breaking into a motor vehicle, financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud, and a probation violation with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services
  • Michael Drayton, 36, of Charleston, is charged with breaking into a motor vehicle, financial transaction card theft and financial transaction card fraud
Sgt. Anthony Gibson says the investigation into the crime spree went on for months and investigators were able to identify and charge the three.
“The Charleston Police Department acknowledges that property crimes impact more individuals in our community than other types of crimes,” he said. “It is crucial to safeguard against these crimes of opportunity. We strongly advise removing all valuables from your vehicles, ensuring your vehicle doors are locked, parking in well-lit areas, removing and securely storing all firearms, and vigilantly reporting any suspicious activity.”
Jail records state a judge has set bond at a total of $378,000 for the charges Phillips faces; $70,000 for Smalls’ charges; and $65,000 for Drayton’s charges.
The three were being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
