6-Year-Old Alabama Girl Killed in Drive-By Shooting
Published January 05, 2011

ECLECTIC, Alabama -- Authorities say a 6-year-old girl  was killed in a drive-by shooting when someone fired up to 18 rounds from a rifle through the home where she was sleeping.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Elmore County sheriff's officers have questioned two men in the death of Kenyatta Kendrick.

Sheriff Bill Franklin said law enforcement officials believe a third person might be involved in the shootings early Tuesday.

Franklin says 19-year-old Darren Kendrick, Kenyatta's uncle, was sleeping in a nearby chair and was hit once in the left hip and once in the left ankle. A hospital spokeswoman says he's listed in fair condition.

Man pleads guilty to 2011 murder of child in Elmore Co. by John Shryock

WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -
One of the suspects in the January 2011 murder of a 6-year-old girl pleaded guilty to her death Thursday. Bernard Nix, 20, entered his plea before a judge nearly two years after Kenyatta Kendrick, an Electic native, was gunned down.

Elmore County Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds heard Nix's plea of guilt and ordered a sentencing date for January 2014. Nix's co-defendant, Stalandus Slaughter, is set to go to trial on December 16, 2013.

A third suspect was arrested in connection with the homicide. Aaron McDowell pleaded guilty to one count of assault in the first degree and one count murder back on August 1, 2013. As part of his plea deal, McDowell will serve 20 years for murder and 10 years for assault to run concurrently. He will also have to testify in other cases if called by the State.

Kendrick was shot to death on January 4, 2011 when around 3 a.m. someone fired 18 rounds from a high-powered rifle at the girl's house. Five people were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Injured in the shooting was the girl's uncle, though he survived. The child was not as fortunate. She was fatally wounded when one of the bullets hit her in the back as she slept.

Investigators determined the motive to be connected to some sort of feud going on with the suspects and a 15-year old relative of the Kendrick family dating back in the previous summer.
