Former Fort Mill Mayor Charlie Powers recuperates at his Fort Mill home Wednesday. Powers was shot in the face during a robbery Tuesday at John Boy's Valero in Fort Mill.

FORT MILL -- A Rock Hill woman remained hospitalized Wednesday after she and former Fort Mill Mayor Charlie Powers were shot during a downtown convenience store robbery the night before.
Meanwhile, police have not made any arrests in the case and are looking into similarities between that shooting and another recent shooting at a seafood market.

In Tuesday's incident, a man robbed and shot Yen Nguyen, 54, a clerk at John Boy's Valero on Spratt Street around 8:30 p.m. As the man fled, he shot 68-year-old Powers as he entered the store, according to a report from the Fort Mill Police Department.

Police found Nguyen on the floor behind the store counter, the report states.

She was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she was listed in serious condition Wednesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Herald could not reach Nguyen's family.

Powers, the town's former mayor of 24 years, was shot once in the face. He was released from CMC on Wednesday morning.

The weapon was not recovered at the scene, said Capt. Bryan Zachary of the Fort Mill Police Department.

Rock Hill and Fort Mill officials met Wednesday to probe similarities in Tuesday's shooting and an incident that happened at Rock Hill's Saltwater Seafood Market on Jan. 28.

"We're looking into the possibilities that the two cases could be related," Rock Hill Police Lt. Jerry Waldrop said. "There's a lot of similarities in the cases."

Waldrop declined to further comment.

In the Jan. 28 case, a man entered the market and demanded money from a 47-year-old man who did not speak English. The man's sister, Ping Chen, 40, came to the store's front counter and handed over $300, according to police reports.

The man walked toward the store door. He turned around and shot Chen with a pistol in her right shoulder. He then leaned over the counter and fired again. That time, he hit Chen in her left hand as she attempted to cover her face.

In Tuesday's shooting, Fort Mill Fire Chief Ken Kerber said the clerk gave the gunman "what she had, and he shot her anyway."

Police did not disclose how much money Nguyen handed over during the robbery.

As Powers walked into the store, the gunman fired, striking Powers in the face. Then the man fled on foot, the report states.

In both incidents, the clerks complied with the triggerman's request. Police on Wednesday said they don't know whether the same person was responsible in both incidents.

Fort Mill authorities are looking for a BLACK man, who was dressed in all black including a black toboggan.

If caught, the man faces multiple charges, including two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill and armed robbery. The latter charge could carry up to a 30-year prison sentence, said Deputy Solicitor Willy Thompson of the 16th Circuit Solicitor's Office.

The shooting came just over a year after Fort Mill store clerk and owner Mahendrabhai Gordham "Omar" Patel was killed in a robbery at the Sunoco Petro Mart on Jan. 4, 2007. Fort Mill's only homicide for 2007 happened about two miles from John Boy's.

No arrest has been made in that shooting; however, a person of interest is in custody in North Carolina in connection to a Charlotte robbery.

Yen T. Nguyen of Rock Hill had been listed as serious.

Meanwhile, police have not made an arrest in the double shooting that on Tuesday wounded Nguyen and former Fort Mill Mayor Charlie Powers, Capt. Bryan Zachary said.

“The case is being investigated very diligently," Zachary said.

On Tuesday, Powers was shot in the face and Nguyen was found on the floor behind a counter at John Boy’s Valero on Spratt Street in downtown Fort Mill around 8:30 p.m.

Nguyen, a clerk at the store, gave the gunman “what she had," an official said.

Powers, who took the time to say, ”’Hi, how are you?’ to the triggerman just before he fired his weapon and fled, was taken to CMC. He was released Wednesday.

Powers, the town’s former mayor of 24 years, was shot once in the face. Officials have declined to say where or how many times Nguyen was shot; however, a report notes that she “suffered a gunshot wound."

Authorities have not released how much money the gunman fled with. If caught, he faces multiple charges, including two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill and armed robbery.

Fort Mill authorities are looking for a black man, who was dressed in all black including a black toboggan.
